Chapter 55 - Constellation Class

Another old-ass design that the Federation is still inexplicably using. In an age of advanced replication and manufacturing, how does it still make sense to field these old ass ships? Discuss!

_____

I expected some argument, but Captain Picard and his crew remained silent and thoughtful. Somehow, I suspected they felt the same as I did on this point. Captain Picard’s previous command, the Stargazer, was a Constellation-class ship and was 10 years older than even the Excelsior-class design, and they were still in service today!

I have to agree, with the exception of a training ship for the academy, there is no reason for the Constellation to have been in use as long as it was, heck Picard himself described the class 'overworked, underpowered and always on the verge of falling apart at the seams'. Heck I would have to agree that it seems it's an intentional handicap, though it seems that by the time of tng Starfleet was launching ew designs based on the galaxy class like the, Nebula and New Orleans class but it seems with exception of the Nebula they were discontinued.

War sage

It truly doesn't make any sense. That's the problem. In an era where technology continues to advance and replication and manufacturing are faster and easier, there is no reason to continue to field relics like the Constellation Class. Newer ships could handle the same mission profile in a smaller package with a smaller crew with a likely improvement in performance which, given the under strength status of Starfleet as is, would actually help with personnel assignments. It's the same reason the USN is ditching the Ticonderogas in favor of the Flight 3 Arleigh Burkes now. Similar mission profile on a more efficient platform with lower operating and maintenance costs. If the Federation was bound and determined to keep the Constellations around, they should have been mothballed like the USN again did with the Wickes class after WW1, preserved and maintained with the ability to be quickly refurbished and brought back into service, or better yet to relegate them to interior patrols/assignments or planetary defense forces. No doubt in my mind that fielding obsolete designs is an intentional handicap the Federation places on itself for the sake of appearances...just as they continue to under-arm the ships they have, and press different classes into rolls for which they weren't designed or intended
