Two-Finger Waltz Picking?

(banjo is tuned to gCGCD, relative)

David recently asked if there are any other rhythmic possibilities with a two-finger, thumb-lead playing style besides the typical "bum-ditty" pattern.  A three-count waltz-like rhythm is one example that comes to mind. I yall want to, we can look at a number of different examples of this type of picking.

Two-Finger Waltz Picking?

Will, I'd say if your hand wants to three-finger pick go on and do it. Sounds like you are already putting together the fundamentals of your own method.

great video - I have been working on Off to Sea Once More in this tuning. I end up falling into 4/4 time. I am doing it in clawhammer style, but I want to try to work with the two-finger. Since most of my background is on guitar, I am having the most trouble with two finger, The thumb starts turning into a "bass" thumb or I start to include index and middle finger. middle finger stays on the bottom string. and the index on more the middle strings.

This is really helpful. I was just working on "Jack of Diamonds" (obviously the same song) earlier. Trying to create a workable waltz rhythm has vexed me for a while as I have been trying pretty hard lately to get over the bump and take my playing to the next level--getting away from the usual bum-ditty and throwing in some 3/4 time tunes.

Yes! That is Jeremiah "Bink" Campbell of Arizona/Carolina. I will add "Willow Garden/Rose Conley" to our working list.T hat is an example of one that's good in both "waltz" pattern picking and the standard overhand/thumb-lead rhythm.

Thanks so much for starting this up. I have enjoyed your stuff for a while now and having you break things down is a great help, especially for a fairly novice banjo player like myself. As far as this topic goes, there is a youtube video from a few years back of you and another fella on guitar playing what I think is "In the Willow Garden." It has a Waltz thing going on. Could you do that one for us at some point?

Thank you for this great demonstration. My original question was prompted by my experience in playing with the group that I play with every week where we are playing songs and tunes in which that "bum-ditty" rhythm, whether played clawhammer style or duplicated with 2 finger doesn't really fit with the music we are trying to play and/or sing. So I am trying to figure out alternatives to make the banjo fit better into the group. This helps a lot. Thanks again.

This to say that this project you are doing is great (and a rye whiskey dedicated tutorial, your style, would make it even greater :) )

Thank you! I love Rye Whiskey and I think I discovered your music looking for versions of that tune.
