Banjo Building Basics

I built my first banjo at the age of 16 with the help of my father and the book Foxfire 3: Animal Care, Banjos and Dulcimers, Hide Tanning &c. If you're interested in gourd banjos, those are covered in Foxfire 6.

We'll go over how that first banjo of ours went vs. the instruments Robyn and I are building and selling today.

I got the set of chisels at Aldi a couple years ago. They were less than $15 - I've got a TON of use out of them. For a set of chisels that won't break the bank, but are pretty decent quality, I can't recommend them enough: https://paulsellers.com/2015/06/aldi-chisels-in-usa-stores/

Oh man. I'm glad you showed the peg tapering/reamer thing--I've tried doing them by hand. Royal disaster :)

It's a huge subject of course. I don't quite know where to begin other than to show yall the books and articles that I have used, share the basic luthiering knowledge that I've managed to inherit and show some close-ups and stuff. We'll see how it goes--as always we need feedback to keep these videos up to standard.

Sooo... many questions. I guess I'll just wait for more videos.

Yes, a cheap electric jigsaw is handy for roughing out those big hardwood circles and some parts of the neck. More often than not I'll carve my banjo necks entirely with hand tools--I find it's more enjoyable and produces a more unique piece.

I have a couple Dulcimers from the Beech mountain builders (Glenn and Pressnell) so this building tradition is something I'm incredibly found of. Nothing sounds quite like these banjars. Love seeing how much of your building you do the old fashioned way with hand tools. Definitely a project I plan on giving a go. Do you use the jigsaw to cut out the hoops?

Sounds like you are just going to have to start building it and video taping. I can contribute some video footage I have. I do use a router with a circle jig that saved lots of time. Keep it up!

Been wanting to build my own banjo for while, this video has been super helpful! I'd love to see more on the topic.

Pretty sure I’ve got a whole set of foxfire books stashed away somewhere. I think they need to replace every text book in schools with these. Also need to find me one of them damn drills.😂

Yes! Yes! Yes!! Pls more!
