Jack Bunch | London, Kentucky Banjoist

(Dan Torigoe is a dude from Japan who spends most of his time studying traditional American folk music  and travelling around, mostly the southeast, recording it. Check out Dolceola Recordings https://www.facebook.com/dolceola.recordings/ to see more of his work.)

Jack learned to play music from his uncle Henry Bunch who lived very close to well-known banjoist Pete Steele. Steele apparently never mentioned his banjo playing neighbor to any of the field recorders who came to visit him (George Gibson, personal communication 22 August 2017).

What's his name? Where from?

My dad used to play banjo like this. He wasn't famous but he definitely had influence! :)

That’s for sure interesting. I come from a guitar background so when I tried to do bends in banjo it took me out of the claw hammer flow and made my muscle memory want to play blues licks. Haven’t tried it with two finger yet. I’ve heard a bit about the controversial origins of white banjo players. I like history and see mankind making the same stupid mistakes over and over. Modern man included. What I’ve read from George Gibson on the racial origins of this music is sure relieving. It’s nice to think that when the world is filled with negativity there’s at least pockets of people living harmoniously.

It is relatively rare to see a traditional banjo player from outside the "East Kentucky School" bend a string. George Gibson calls this technique a "slur;" I use them often but usually in a more subtle manner than Bunch does here.

I think that’s the first I’ve seen or heard a string bend on banjo. Sounds great.

Now that's an embellishment I have not seen before!
