Cumberland Gap | Instrumental Part

Here's a somewhat slowed-down and close-up shot of the little interlude I sometimes play up the neck in between the standard A and B parts of Cumberland Gap.

Most of the better traditional banjo players used a similar instrumental break to add variety to this otherwise common tune. Mine is fairly simple--there are many other ways to do this and I encourage you to seek out older recordings when coming up with your own instrumental run for this song.

Thank you for the slowed-down video. I appreciate your invitation to work out different "B" parts for this tune. As you mention, I have heard many different versions of this melody. Some have 3 parts. Your approach is in the best spirit of the banjo tradition. Variety and creativity mixed with tradition. I worked out this tune using 3-finger picking.
