Q&A | Pretty Polly "Clawhammer" & Should I Learn More than One Song at a Time?

In this segment I'll play a version of Pretty Polly inspired by the recent tablature posted by Justin over in the Community section at https://patreon.com/cliftonhicks and Louie asks whether trying to learn 2, 3 or more songs at a time is worthwhile.

Yes, sir! Those long, droning patterns like in Pretty Polly or Morphine naturally draw both player and listener/dancer into a trance.

I love how this vid shows some of the picking patterns and tricks you use (like the rolling background). That is really, really cool!

Thanks for sharing that tab and stirring up some interest, for me at least, in a different approach to an old song I have really only played one way for two decades.

omg where's your body?! all i can see is your head, hands and banjo just floating in the air.

Written lists are a great idea. One way that I used to memorize a particularly long song (like "Will the Weaver" or "Old German War" for example) was to write out the verses by hand. I found that when I wrote the song out this way I would have it memorized usually by the time I had finished writing.

My wife and I both used to hunt occasionally but in recent years started feeling a lot of regrets over it. We quit buying factory-raised meat from the store years ago but continued hunting and eating wild animals, mostly because that is a big part of the culture here. Anyhow, it's been at least two years since I shot my last turkey--even though it IS turkey season and that IS my turkey suit.

I find that it helps me to keep a list of songs I've learned along with their tunings so I can keep track of everything. I then go back to the list and remember songs that I'd forgotten about and give myself a refresher. I also have a list of songs I'm halfway done with or want to learn so I don't forget about them either.

P.S. Were you out turkey hunting this morning?

Justin Hoffmann

Pretty cool! Thanks for doing that new version of Pretty Polly...awesome...

I know the problem of learning too much songs at one time and I started to make a little recall session every one or two days in which I go through almost all the songs that I know so far very quickly. Doing this I sometimes come back practicing a song that I didn't pay much attention too for a while and it becomes a lot of fun to discover it anew. What mostly stops me to do that is my being too lazy for the constant retuning of the banjo but I try to look at it as a lesson too. Thank you Clifton for your commitment. The teaching videos are just perfect. You are the teacher and inspiration I could not find over here!
