"Morphine" on Banjo #12

I'm calling Banjo #12 done at this point. Since we've been listening to a lot of Bill Cornett lately I played and sang some of his verses to Morphine.

gDGBD, relative tuning.

I'm already thinking about the next banjo and the next person on the "potential buyer" list...

"Morphine" on Banjo #12

Comments

My experience at mechanical production ended in junior high wood shop when I could barely make the sand paper block, although i did better later in my life doing rudimentary machining on a drill press and Bridgeport mill. I have little knowledge and less dickering about banjo mechanics and just trust follks who I know do because all I can do is mess things up. I usually dont like the sound of mountain banjos but I like the way that one sounds. Maybe you have figured something out in regard to brass which i think sounds a bit tinny

Tony, are you referring to what looks like a copper or brass fingerboard on that banjo? If so: that's actually just a plain old solid walnut neck! I use black walnut wood for necks AND stain with a dark dye my wife makes from black walnut husks (the trees grow like weeds here in N. Georgia). Anyhow, for some reason I could NOT get the fingerboard to take any stain!!! The rest of the neck stained the usual dark purple-brown color but the fingerboard stayed that rich blonde color--sort of unusual for a piece of black walnut I think. Turned out real pretty and almost looks like a brass fingerboard.

nice mellow but strong sound think the metal plate does something for it

Fantastic!

Sounds really great! I really enjoyed the build along videos too. Cheers!

That's whats its all about right there! Very nice!

Sounds and looks great. One day I will take on a build myself. I'm sure it is a gratifying feeling when you hear an instrument you built, sing like it just did.
