f#DEAD, relative (aka "Frankie" tuning)

Here's my attempt at this fairly unusual piece of music that I learned from banjo master, researcher and mentor George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. Virgil Anderson, Dee Hicks and Dock Boggs (to name a few) also used this tuning to great effect.

Look out for some close-ups on this one as well as a discussion/lesson in the coming days.

Nora Brown does a wonder job playing this tune. I highly recommend checking it/her out.

Im in Kona/Waikoloa on the other side of the island from Kilauea. It’s not even a part of the conversation. Not a concern at all. The locals say the “VOG” ( volcanic fog) isn’t any worse than usual. I heard much more about the eruption on the mainland. Although I did see a stream of what were probably national guard choppers coming from the east this morning. I assume Kilauea related. Aloha!

According to the "news" it's all fire and brimstone in Hawaii these days--according to actual humans living there or visiting most things are back to normal. Sounds like an interesting vacation.

Sweet! I’m banjoless on vacation in Hawaii right now (not complaining), but I’m looking forward to start working on this when I get back. Thanks, Clifton!
