It does take some getting used to. Instead of tuning down so low, try fB♭FAC instead.

I love your music. Thanks for your dedication to the old time musicians. I have a question about minstrel banjo tuning. Tuning the 4th string to G is rather difficult. The string either feels too loose or if I try to go up it is too tight and snaps the string. Using Aquila Classic Banjo Nylgut strings. Is the string supposed to feel that loose and play that low? Doesnt seem to sound right.
