July 18th: George Gibson @ Warren Wilson College!

George R. Gibson (banjo master, collector, researcher and mentor) has been invited to give a presentation at the 2018 Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, North Carolina. George is scheduled to go on at 1:15pm Wednesday, July 18th as part of their Old Time Week Master Artists series.

"George Gibson was born at Bath in Knott County, Kentucky where he  learned to play and sing songs (in the old tunings) from his father and  neighbors. As far as he knows, he is the last person still playing the  old Burgeys Creek banjo music. The University Press of Illinois is  scheduled to publish a book titled Banjo Roots and Branches in which George has an essay regarding the African roots of the banjo in Kentucky. He has recently become a resident of nearby Hendersonville, NC."

Mr. Gibson was kind enough to invite me up to the event as his assistant, so I will also be attending on the 18th to help hip set up his display &c.

Besides George they have assembled an impressive group of guest master artists including Phil Jameson, Thomas Maupin, Sheila Kay Adams, Kirk Sutphin, John Harrod, Lee Sexton!!! and a bunch of others.

Registration is required in order to attend: https://swangathering.com/register/register.html

I know I will only be in town from Wednesday through about Friday--besides helping George with his presentation I will be visiting Jack Dillen to have a banjo repaired and, if he permits, hope to get at least one good video out of George. He still has several rare pieces which have never been recorded. YOU should definitely attend the Gathering if you are able--I want to see Lee Sexton and some of the other folks.

Are you in Asheville on the 18th only? Or will you be hanging around on the weekend? We are planning a trip to Johnson city one weekend to see some family, if I can work it to happen on that weekend I’ll see if I can sign up to go. Looks like a it’s going to be a good time
