I will do my best. I first heard the song performed by Matt Kinman in 2008 and have tried off-and-on over the years to work up a version of my own that I liked. It is a surprisingly difficult song to render.

Andrew, after observing just one of this gentleman's lectures/performances you have a deeper understanding of American folk culture than 99% of Americans.

Any chance we can get a Cold Icy Mountain demo or lesson?

Thanks a lot for sharing this Clifton, really inspiring stuff, I understand why this man is such a big influence on you, I must say falling in love with a music tradition from another country isn’t always easy, not having the opportunity to fully experience it first hand, it makes posts like this all the more appreciated, thanks again!

I agree 100%. I have never heard more attractive and electrifying picking or singing than what I have heard this man belt out in various casual settings like you describe. When one visits him at his ancestral home in Kentucky, with those log walls vibrating around him... well, it is indescribable. Pardon me if this offends anyone's religion: the man is something of a shaman. After sundown, perched in the shadows and surrounded by stars, chirping crickets and those ancient, hand-hewn logs he TRAVELS to a place that no other living banjo picker can access.

I was there at this concert. Some of the most startling and wonderful performances and singing I have ever heard in my 71 years have been George, whether on a recording, at concerts like this, in his living room, or just George picking away and singing in a hallway waiting for a room to be open at a banjo event. I hope folks who see this who don't know his work will acquire it, and see some of the performances he has on YouTube or if you can still get some of his recordings from the Apal Shop,. I hope he will find time to perform more because just seeing what he can do with a banjo can inspire you to want to sing and pick or make any kind of music. Thans for sharing this.'
