Hold On | Filmed by Dan Torigoe for Dolceola Recordings

Dan Torigoe is one of the hardest-working and hardest-travelling field recorders that I know. A few weeks ago He and his assistant visited my place, filmed, photographed and recorded a bunch of songs.

Apparently, his recordings of John Haywood, Lee Sexton, Jack Bunch, myself and a few others will soon be released as a compilation album of Kentucky-origin banjo music. In the mean time, he has been uploading a lot of blues and sacred music from other places he has explored throughout the southeastern United States.

Check out his other short films here: https://www.youtube.com/dolceolarecordings/

And perhaps throw him a thumbs-up and follow his posts here:

Tonny, that is a Weymann "Keystone State" made in Philadelphia about 1910. Here's a video where I talk about it and show a few details: https://youtu.be/UEDcEFmuefg

Great playing Clifton, and what a great banjo sound too. What kind of banjo is that?

Tonny Kluften

Dan says "...recorded with Ampex 601 and RCA 77DX."

Do you know what kind of mic Dan used? It looks like one of those cascade rca 44 copies, but I could be mistaken. It sounds great!

Kurush, looking back I see that I did some close-up videos of this but I never did a formal "discussion" on how it's played. Close-ups https://youtu.be/AT2xee6LTLQ and https://youtu.be/2sU4z6JivP8

This would be another great one to learn, at some point. It's pretty dang catchy.

Good choice of booze there!

Bobby Banks

I love what Justin said! But for the sake of saying something because I’ve had a few gin and tonics. I love the pastoral feel on that! Especially to a hack like me living in west coast suburbia! Beautiful work all around!

Mike Rebitzke

Raw and organic.... I love it.

Justin Hoffmann

Top notch!! Making that banjo sing!!!

Sean Gares

That was great, Clifton! Very professional. I hope you get some good exposure out of it.

I spy black walnut trees in the background...

Micheál Mac Labhrás

I really enjoyed that, thanks for sharing!
