Brand new clip of one of my favorite banjoists, John Haywood, filmed by Dan Torigoe at Whitesburg, Kentucky.
I first met Haywood on the music festival circuit about 2008. In those days he was just getting back into tattooing after a several year hiatus but his focus seemed mainly on his banjo playing and his painting. At the festivals he was usually tied up at his own booth selling oil paintings but after the sun went down and the public mostly went home John would take his banjo out and play the Hell out of it.
He liked to play solo but would just as readily sit in the "jam circle" or join a friend's band on stage. I can only remember him playing two-finger back then and he immediately captured my attention as an interesting picker and singer. Also an accomplished guitarist and fiddler, John is perhaps most well known today for his tattooing business in downtown Whitesburg (where he also sells paintings and hosts the occasional party) The Parlor Room: Fine Art & Custom Tattoo: https://www.parlorroomtattoo.com/
