In this video I will describe in detail how to string and tune a regular six-string guitar or guitar-banjo like master Kentucky folk artists Roscoe Holcomb and George Gibson.
My understanding of how this music was and is played comes from many years of discussion, observation and personal correspondence with George Gibson concerning his unique playing styles and one or two conversations with John Cohen who closely observed Roscoe Holcomb's guitar playing. Also, see Cecelia Conway's groundbreaking book African Banjo Echoes in Appalachia for more details on how early black blues guitarists transition from banjo to guitar around the turn of the 20th century.

I forgot to mention in the video that while Holcomb apparently used more-or-less his usual two-finger "thumb lead" banjo style when playing guitar, Gibson often switches to his own folk-derived three-finger style when playing guitar. I only use two fingers myself.
