"Minstrel" Banjo Build Progress

13" maple rim (cut from a drum shell) and an extra-long cherry neck. Peg head inspired by a circa 1850 Boucher design.

(Below: original peg head from c. 1850 banjo by William Boucher.)

I had the same question as Kurosh. Minstrel banjo is my next banjo project. This new banjo build of yours is looking really sharp, Clifton. Thanks for sharing the process.lko

Kurosh: the dowel+neck can be carved from one piece of wood or two separate pieces (like I did here). You can also set the dowel straight into the neck and then angle it in the pot (drill holes at different heights, like you suggest) or by angling the dowel in the heel--or both! On this one, because the pot is shallow, I angled the dowel in the heel and probably will not need to offset my mortises to achieve neck angle. However, the last tack head that I built I did both: i.e. the dowel was slightly angled _and_ the two mortise holes were offset slightly in order to achieve neck angle.

Love the shaping of the neck. Especially around the 5th string peg. Two questions, is the dowel separate from the neck, or one piece. And for the neck agle, are you angling the dowel from the neck , or keeping the dowel strait, and simply drilling the holes in the pot, at different heights ? Looks great, can't wait to see it strung up, and ringing out.
