Rare Flush-Fret Lyon & Healy

Here we have a lovely and fairly rare flush-fret Lyon & Healy banjo made in Chicago sometime during the turn of the 20th century 1880-1910 or thereabouts.

Nice banjo, fully restored and ready to play.

Same tuning (gDGBD) and same family of songs. I heard Matt Kinman sing and play it ten years ago for the first time--George never sang it for me until after that. They both play more complex versions than I do. I will have to sit down and come up with a good, simple version to teach yall.

Is Goin Across the Mountain a good starting place for this song? Tuning and what not? Really enjoyed this and George's version from the Banjo Gathering.

Lovely banjo. It actually sold already. Some people don't like this type of sound, it doesn't "growl" or "punch" like higher end banjos, but what it does have is that sound of the early recordings. I was just in Bristol, Virginia with Justin Hoffman and we listened to a lot of the 1927 Bristol Session recordings there in the museum and EVERY banjo sounded like this one. Most of those early recordings were made on blue collar instruments like this one, and the sound is unmistakable.

Lovely sound in that banjo.

I'm going to start offering these via Etsy to make it go a little easier for everyone. As always, email me clifhicks(at)gmail(dot)com to discuss any of this stuff.

Looks great. You've probably told me before, but do you have a website where you sell this stuff?

John Gilby

Cool banjo, how much?
