As requested, here's my two-finger approach slowed down & up close.

Will do, it's on my short list. When that happens you'll receive an email update linking to the post.

Would you be willing to tab this one out?

These slowed down versions are brilliantly useful, Clif. It's like being given the key to a door. I love this piece, it has a really bluesy feel and the little riff (if I may use a rock n roll term) you constantly return to gives the song a real groove as well as making me think differently about how the 'filler' notes can be used.

thank you so much for this piece! youtube algorithms lead me to your version of this song (never heard about you before) about 3 years ago and i was stunned. l listened to it on repeat for about one hour and it was at that moment i decided to start banjo picking for real. its, as you say, an advanced piece and i am finally at that point when i can take it on two finger style. this song was the start of my serious banjo picking interest and now the circle is soon about to be closed. thanks to you! big up, cant thank you enough.

Thank you, this is great. I'm just working over and over in the "first run" now so as to get my ring finger properly programed.

Come all you good people whomever you may be I hope you'll pay attention and listen unto me, My name don't make no difference the truth to you I'll tell I am a brave volunteer and I'm sure I wish you well. At the age of sixteen I joined that army grand We left old Kentucky and sailed to a foreign land, Our captain he informed us and I'm sure he thought it right Before the morning comes boys I am sure you'll have to fight. I saw them Germans coming Lord I heard them give their yell My feelings at that moment no human's tongue can tell, We saw their shining rifles their bullets 'round us flew Now all my strength had left me and all my courage too. Our captain stood beside me he gave me good advice He told me how to surrender so I might save my life, My friends shot down beside me tears falling from my face O how I love you brother but I can't take your place. We fought throughout the morning before the battle was done The dead and the dying lay under the bloody sun, And then I thought of mother who asked me for to stay And not to go with strangers and sail so far away I've been in the midst of battle I know it's harshness well I've been across that great ocean and rode down the streets of Hell, I've lived a life of misery I've been where Death he roams I'll tell you from experience boys you had better stay at home!

Oh yeah, need lyrics too.

Micheál Mac Labhrás

So when you tune it down to sing along, what is the exact tuning you use? The sung version has a very dark, eerie sound to it--I think it's a result of the lower tuning.

Micheál Mac Labhrás

Yes, I think so. When I learned this song from George Gibson he used a six-string banjo and a three-finger picking approach that did most of the work. I had to figure the song out on a 5-string banjo using my own two-finger approach, hence my left hand has to perform alternate pulls to emulate Gibson's right hand.

Clifton Hicks

Are you using an alt string pull off in lieu of a TITI pattern at all in this? I find myself doing that every now and then but I'm not sure why. Just sort of flows more easily than the constant right hand roll.

Matt Spears

This is great... I am trying to work out an overhand picking pattern to emulate the syncopated, off-beat two finger sound... I will also post some Tab on this song later tonight.
