"German War" | Close-Up (Up-Picking)

In response to several requests, in this video I attempt to demonstrate "German War" using up-picking/up-stroke/Seeger Style picking. I have never tried to play it this way before, but turned out very similar to the way Matt Kinman plays German War, Texas Rangers and Southern Texas (all related songs).

I start out playing the song through at normal speed, then again while singing a verse over it to help you form a better idea of how the words match up with the picking. Then I slow down and show a couple different styles of up-picking and different angles.

Let me know what you think!

Would be great to get the tabs and to give a lesson!

Wow. You are becoming a great slow downer. Won't have to use the video speed wheel anymore. lol

That's one I should teach. I always tuned to G and up picked it. Matt Kinman up picks it out of gCGCD. I think Buell Kazee played it in G.

I know I am hanging onto the subject of up-picking. Do you ever try with "Brother Green?"

Taylor Davis

Yes! I'm hoping somebody will start playing this piece and singing the old "Texas Rangers" words to it. Whenever I do a "cowboy" song I prefer to up-pick or fingerpick (like "Southern Texas" or "Hills of Mexico).

Clifton Hicks

Up picking definitely gives the song some momentum. The technique seems to really drive a tune forward, giving it a more cowboy feel

Really helped me! I was trying to do all my pull-offs at the high string.
