Taylor's Banjo Completed!

This banjo's neck came from a black walnut tree on Taylor's family land up in Virginia. Since the block he sent me was good and long I decided to make this neck slightly longer than standard (as is often seen with early "minstrel" banjos). The hoop is a maple snare drum shell, submerged cherry bridge and tail piece, deer bone nut and rosewood fiddle pegs.

I was wondering how you got so many. I just have one that I'm afraid to use. I found a guy on Etsy, ChichesterInc, who sells African goat hides for a very reasonable price. I also bought several of his precut skins. They're top notch.

These hides from Jeff Menzies are pretty cool. Some have really wild spots, others look like they were scraped out with a dang conch shell (which I think is cool also). Jeff doesn't sell these hides cheap since he puts a lot of work into them, so I actually traded him a banjo for a big fat role of hides. Trading a banjo for a heap of goat hides has now been scratched off my bucket list.
