"Hustling Gamblers" (Country Blues) | Close-Up

eCFGC actual (f[sharp]DGAD relative) aka "Dock Boggs tuning" or "Southern Texas" tuning.

In this video I demonstrate how I play Hustling Gamblers/Country Blues/False-Hearted Lovers Blues using the overhand "clawhammer" technique, then two-finger "thumb-lead" and finally a more complicated up-picking or "upstroke" technique.

John, sounds like you are referring to the last style I demonstrated which I call 'up-picking' or 'upstroke.' I use three or four different approaches for that style depending in the song (I need to do a detailed video on these). In this example, yes, my trigger finger is picking up AND down when you here thise successive notes (either) on the same string or a neighboring string. This is a very difficult technique but really helps smooth out the otherwise galloping rythm of typical up-picking. Sometimes the gallop sounds better; sometimes this more notey approach sounds better (like on the this song). This is something I came up with on my own and it may not be a 'traditional' technique at all.

So Clifton are you sometimes brushing down on one sting with your index or are you always just plucking up and the downwards motion is just returning the finger to position without hitting the string? It looks like there are points when you have two notes in rapid succession on the same string that you pluck up then hit down again?

Wow that up-stroke especially is excellent - too hard for me though I fear ;)
