"East Virginia" 2-Finger Lesson fFGCD

Someone asked me to do a 2-finger lesson + tab on the original version of East Virginia that I learned from George Gibson. This version is unique and apparently Gibson's original arrangement.

Gibson performs the song (I think 3-finger!) on his Last Possum Up the Tree album, available here:  https://juneappalrecordings.bandcamp.com/track/east-virginia-2

Thank you for sharing this! Wonderful teaching about this song and how to play it.

This is a really sweet arrangement, I've never seen this tuning used before.

George sings mostly the usual verses to Darling Cora. The unusual ones he sings are the following:Wake up wake up my darling What makes you sleep so sound? Them highwaymen are riding Gonna burn this whole damn town. Last night upon my pillow Last night upon my bed, Had them prison bars all around me Them cold chains on my legs. Wake up wake up my darling Put on your wedding gown, I've taken a notion to marry Before I leave this town.

Could i please have a copy of the lyrics? I'd also really appreciate a copy of George Gibson's version of Darling Cora if anyone could please share them with me.

Jerry, that tab is my attempt at showing a simplified 2-finger approach. It's easy to tell which fingers are picking witch strings because I always pick the 1st & 2nd with my pointer and the 3rd, 4th & 5th with my thumb.

Cliff, thanks for this lesson. But I am having a very hard time matching up what you are saying on the video, beginning at around time 4:10, and what is shown on your tab. I think you are showing the tab as clawhammer style instead of two-finger. I do try to just follow what you do on the video without the tab, but it is difficult for me to follow it. Can you prepare a tab showing your two finger style, which looks like a combination of thumb-lead and up-picking style with brushes on the first and second strings. Please show which fingers you use on your right hand (thumb or index) when you pick or strum the strings. Thanks for your help. I would really like to learn this tune in the two-finger style you play it, not in clawhammer. - Jerry
