Building the Kentucky Mountain Banjo...

Here's one way to construct a Kentucky style mountain banjo pot. Note that the two octagon pieces were usually "ripped" (i.e. sawn in profile) by hand, creating two boards from one). The sides of these instruments were usually constructed of 8, 6 or 4 boards mitered and joined together with nails, screws, pegs, or sometimes only glue. Several examples are constructed of one-ply boards steamed and bent into shape. Any cracks or gaps between boards will be filled in during the finishing process.

Also pictured are the necessary tools I use to construct a typical Kentucky pot like this one (clockwise from left): miter jig, try square, back saw. Depending on the dimensions you're working with, you might also need an actual rip saw.

Yes, I'd say the panels are no more than 1/2" and the front & back were ripped from one 3/4" board. They came out about 1/4" thick, although one is _slightly_ thicker.

I’m curious how thick the eight mitred pieces are. 1/2”? And the octagonal face and back are 1/4”? Or no? Yes, I am thinking of having a go...

Yes. Am starting the black walnut neck on it.

Is that all red oak?
