Live Q&A

This one went over an hour and we had over 400 people participate! Many thanks to everyone who donated a few bucks (or a few quid) via Youtube's "superchat" payments. I'm sorry that I don't seem able to schedule these things--I never know when I'll have the time & inclination to sit for one.

FYI: I tried to avoid talking about the pandemic situation, but we did talk about how things are going in different places.

I think some people have always played over the neck, on earlier banjos the action was high enough that no scoop was necessary (the "scoops" seen on some early banjos were a stylistic way of getting the fingerboard under the tacks/straining hoop--I doubt they were designed for playing over).

Personally, I like playing over the neck a little to provide some sound variation. I don't do it regularly, but when I'm in the mood for a mellower sound then I do it.

Hey Clifton, what is your opinion on frailing scoops. Might be my imagination but it seems like some people whose play focuses on using them, think I'm not playing right because I hit the banjo head. And whereas their music is often very melodic, I sometimes find it a bit "twee" and genteel.

I would love to sit in on one of these live sessions. Do you announce them in advance? As always. great stuff.
