Kentucky Mountain Banjo w Horned Peg Head
Added 2020-04-03 16:01:01 +0000 UTC

Just finished the latest build today: black walnut neck, red oak pot, deer bone nut, cherry pegs & tailpiece, fiberskyn head, nylon strings courtesy of Bean Sprout Musical Instruments https://www.thebeansprout.com/

Clifton, from purely a design perspective, I find this one to be your most elegant so far (Is it #20 or thereabouts?) That headstock reminds me of of a horned owl, and the transitions of the neck from pot to nut are magical. Do you feel that the Fiberskyn head will be less prone to sagging in humid weather? Curious how you stretched the head, as it's not a natural hide. Did you glue it down? Did you drill and peg it with your little hardwood pegs after the glue had dried? Don't recall seeing this phase of the build in your videos of the project. Also, did you have to add some sort of blocking to the inside-top of the pot to accept those three longish pegs? Just wondering about the strength of that connection as there is no "dowel-rod" in this design.

Never have before, but suppose there's no reason I couldn't.

You know if you ever want a change of scenery and decide to make a leftie - then we should talk. ;)

Daniel, that's a new one for me! I keep all 20 of my nails as short as possible.

wonderful has such a clarity! ... I heard somewhere with fretless you have to note the string with the fingernail rather than the pad if the fingers, or the tone sounds muddy. Have you found this? It certainly doesn't sound it as it has a beautiful tone that sings out.
