NEW "Darling Cora" Lesson
Added 2020-05-21 20:53:19 +0000 UTC
In response to numerous requests, here is an addendum to our old "Darling Cora" lesson from a couple of years ago. Back then, I wasn't arranging tableture for lessons and I left out some important details...
(Please let me know what you think in the comments, here or on Youtube.)

Craig, I guess here I was just trying to show how George Gibson plays "Darling Cora" and here nearly always plays it overhand. It's simple, however, to play this tab in the two-finger style: merely ignore the long brushes after each leading (melody) note. Instead of brushing across the strings, just pluck the first string alone.

Such a wonderful song, first heard it on Nora Brown's Cinnamon Tree, I'm struggling to find a picking pattern that sounds the way you or Nora play it, trial and error, I guess!

Very much so Richard, I experience, when I go back it becomes richer, integrating almost everything I picked up . It´s a slow ( not always ) extremely pleasant journey . Grtz from Belgium . Rik

I play "The Pea Fowl" (Retta Spradlin) and an original arrangement of "John Henry" in gCGCC. I also composed a song called "Crying Shame" in that tuning, which you can find online. There are several others I'm sure, it was once a common tuning.

I love this tune (thanks to you). Do you have any recommendations for other songs played in dulcimer tuning?

Mika... that is a challenge. There are so many great tunes it's hard to work on one long enough to get it down before you get sucked into another one. It's not a bad thing though. Work on another song and when you come back you'll find it seems easier than you remember. Your brain unconsciously solidifies the knowledge you gained. Anyway, that's my theory.

Music to my ears, Rebecca. I actually edited this down from 15 minutes of me tuning, rambling and swatting flies--glad it turned out OK.

Wow, thanks a lot! Pretty new here. But one of the reasons I'm her is BF Shelton and Darling Cora. I'd love to learn how to play this song. Darn, just as I was getting the first half of Pretty Polly :) Thank you Clifton.

This lesson made my day. I've been playing for less than a month but I'm getting this one down ultra fast thanks to your well paced and interesting video + tab! Learning about the history and origins of these songs makes learning to play them a richer experience.

Same here. "It don't look that way in person... or does it?"

Jonas, I recently asked George about this little manual and I think he mentioned that he'd lost it. I sent him a copy in hopes that he'd update & publish, but he hasn't--he's a busy man! So, I think I need to copy the complete, 24-page manual again and share it here.

I think your version of DC is as good as it gets on the banjo. I'm still in awe whenever I hear it! Started me out playing thumb-lead - which nowadays is absolutely my preferred style. So, thanks!

It cracks me up how loose your strings seem. Looks like you could be playing banjo on one end and fishing with them on the other. :)

That is a very fine old tune and thank you for the insightful background. Is Mr. Gibson's "instruction manual" available to the public? I too am a banjo history student and I am always searching for new reliable sources like George Gibson, so to make me a more educated player.
