gDGBD relative (fCFAC actual). I first learned this song from a recording of Woody Guthrie titled "I Ain't Got Nobody." My late mother (1946-2012) loved Guthrie's music. Whenever I hear his dusty guitar, I think of her side of the family (who were largely sharecroppers/migrant workers from places like Cullman, Alabama and Lebanon, Indiana).
Most contemporary musicians omit the racist lyrics found in the original printed version , but leave in the chorus:
"I don't love a nobody, nobody loves me
You're after my money, don't care for me,
I'm gwine to live single, always a be free
I don't love a nobody, nobody loves me." (Sully, 1896)
Since I was raised on the Woody Guthrie version, I also sing a 'chorus' inspired by his recording:
I don't love nobody nobody loves me
I'm just like a little apple a hanging on a tree,
Don't nobody want me I can plainly see
I don't love nobody and nobody loves me!
