"Trouble On My Mind" Lesson

gDGBD relative. I learned this song from George R. Gibson of Knott County Kentucky who learned it from his neighbor Orgis "Grandpa" Hudson (d. 2005). Orgis, who was called "Granpa" or "Gran" by all who knew him, was a prolific banjo songster and dancer. George told me that he never heard Gran play an instrumental piece--he always sang with his banjo.

Trouble trouble trouble on my mind,
If trouble don't kill me I'll live a long time...

Once I had an old banjo head was strung with twine,
Only song that it could play was "Trouble On My Mind"
Trouble on my mind boys trouble on my mind
I trouble don't kill me I'll live a long time!

I went down to Lynchburg to get a jug of wine,
They hitched me to the whipping post gave me 99...

I went back to Lynchburg to get a pint of gin,
They hitched me to the whipping post gave me Hell again...

I went back to Lynchburg I didn't got to stay,
But I fell in love with a woman and I couldn't get away...

I love this song! Is there a 2 finger tab version? I can transcribe it from your video if needed.

the broken string was a nice touch

I don't see anywhere in the tab about breaking my 1st string. Is that just added flavor? The Knott County snap?

Blaine Chappell

That was fast! Thanks so much!

Hey clifton! Would you ever consider posting the lyrics? It would help for those of us learning to sing as well. Thanks!

It's the stock internal mic on a Sony a5100 camera. I think it's a Zoom in there?

I can make a good bridge but honestly have been ordering them pre-made. I recommend the 5/8" Morris bridge on Elderly.com (do not get the 3/4" Morris bridge as these are prone to collapsing--sorry, just the truth). If you get the un-slotted Morris and cut your own string spacing that's even better.

Clifton Hicks

What microphone are you using there, Clifton?

Russ Chandler

Finished just in time for your string!

Great lesson, thanks! I was wondering how you get your Luscomb to sound so bright & sharp even with nylon strings? It sounds great, I’m trying to emulate that tone on an S. S. Stewart student banjo I recently acquired. Are you still selling the uncapped banjo bridges you made from a while back?
