"Wise County Jail" Lesson | Overhand *and* Two-Finger!

gCGBD relative (fB♭FAC actual) known as "Two-Finger C tuning." I learned this song from the Library of Congress recording of Dock Boggs, who composed it around 1928. In this video I'll discuss the history behind the piece, and demonstrate how to perform it using three different traditional banjo techniques: overhand "clawhammer," two-finger, and up-picking. The attached tableture covers both overhand and two-finger playing methods.

This is awesome! My hometown is Clintwood, which is not far at all from Wise Co.

Sir, for some reason the Performance version is locked, says the "tier is no longer offered".

Matt Gibson

Anything you can do to play the tune is acceptable.

Im wondering 'bout something. on the first 14 notes of the 2 finger style i tried to emulate the overhand a bit by doing, the first note then i use my index and middle finger to pluck the first and second string instead of only the second, its lined up with the "clawhammer" strum on the overhand style. is this acceptable ?

Great lesson and great Dock Boggs history.

Lord have mercy, yes 2-finger C! Keep an eye on me, Ted!

Clifton Hicks

Wouldn't that be a "two-finger C" then? ;) Great lesson format , btw - very comprehensive.

Ted Crilly

Yes, my actual is fB♭FAC (gCGBD relative).

Clifton Hicks

but you are tuned and open F, correct?

Johnnie Wood

Yep. I've only been to that part of VA/KY a few times, but I don't think I've ever even seen a cop. Wouldn't want to meet 'em, the "civilians" are hard enough!

Flint, that were a FLINTlock smoke pole.

Clifton Hicks

Great lesson! Loved the background history. Was that a cap and ball or flintlock? Thougt I hard a slight delay. Regardless, a very nice ending

Hell yea. Been waiting on this one. And yea, law is still crooked around those parts. You don’t have to worry too much about them killing you anymore but they’ll lock you up for nothing. That’s how most small town law is those, in my experience at least.
