Thanks for that. I never thought to just run green ones through, but it makes sense that they would be more potent.

walnut stain: it is my understanding that, somewhat counterintuitively, the green husk stage of the walnut does contain more tannins or juglone or whatever it is that's responsible for the dark stain they give- in other words, more dyepower than their more rotted dark looking iterations that've been laying around for a while. while i do like this patient passive method of walnut stain/ink mentioned here at about an hour& thirty two(letting them sit in a bucket turning to sludge with some rainwater)- in my experience, for those interested in expediting the process a bit (not that there are any freshies around at present), you can also put the bunch of freshly fallen green nuts (especially of Juglans nigra, the 'black walnut') in a big old pot filled with water, and boiling until reduced. Test the stain on something, if it's not dark enough you can add more water and reduce again and also squish em with a masher to really release the good stuff. Strain off the solids. If you want to save some for later you can stabilize the mixture with a wee splash of vodka or everclear to prevent molding. You could probably also get a range of colors from other Juglandaceae species (pecans and so forth) but I've not tried them. (i realize this is late to the party but i wanted to put on something long form recently while i knit after the babies went to sleep!)

I actually like Karen Dalton a lot, although I haven't listened to any of her stuff in a few years. I'll have to revisit.

Thank you for the stream Clifton! I really appreciated the story about the term "clawhammer".

Yes, I certainly don't mean to suggest that the entirety of any given style can be boiled down in any absolute way. Generally speaking, I think guitar style banjo tends toward pretentious, commercial, urban pop; however, as you point out, it's also used to express a ton of great vernacular music. I recently posted a great photo on the Youtube channel of two young (black) guitar style banjoists. The photo was taken outside of Asheville around 1890, and by the looks of them I don't think their music was very pretentious or urban.

Hi, that was on at 6am for me (a little too early). As you were talking about the NY folk scene in the 60s and also Cherokee musicians I was wondering wot you thought about Karen Dalton? My other banjo teacher (sorry😉) wasn’t that impressed, but I’m kinda obsessed with her. The claw hammer info was fascinating too, thanks.

Isabel Smith

Sounds familiar. Could've been Sprung. The album in question came out about 1965 and was the first to use the term "clawhammer banjo."

Clifton Hicks

I'm just now watching parts I missed, during the live video, due to family phone calls, etc. Was it Roger Sprung you were trying to remember?--You mentioned a guy from New York who did that clawhammer album, etc. Karen

Rob MacKillop is a great source for classic banjo

Daniel Pearce

not sure all Classic banjo was just copying guitar style and was pretentious pop ... they played a lot of ragtime/polkas which were great and just another way of playing this wonderful instrument

I had to be in and out a bit but the livestream was fun. I’d tune into more if you did them. I had issues with Patreon, which are supposed to be fixed. I was showing up under my other email, despite logging in on this one so when I asked you if you could contact me regarding the Fairbanks banjo you sent me, I’m sure it was confusing, like who’s this knuckle head. Anyway I know your gone this weekend so if you could call or message me before I’d most appreciate it. Take care

Enjoyed it very much Clifton, thank you again.
