Please do come to England!!

Apparently, groundhogs and cats had a hard time during the heyday of Appalachian banjo picking. Lily Mae Ledford tells a similar story, as does Stanley Hicks, and I'm sure others.

your comments on banjo head skins reminded me of the story Doc Watson told--his dad made him his first banjo, and it was fitted with a groundhog-skin head. They decided groundhog was too thick, so when grandma's cat died, they used it to make a new head. He said it was just as good as a Rogers!

That whole album is great! Well worth folks getting it. Would love to see a lesson on it.

O yeah! I grew up listening to this recording! Haven't heard it in years. Whenever I heard Ralph I think of something George Gibson told me when I first heard him play "On the Road Somewhere" (Got a Mule to Ride). When I mentioned that the song sounded familiar, George responded, "Yeah, them two boys from over in Virginia recorded it under another title." He was referring to the Stanley Brothers. L.O.L.

Clifton Hicks

Clif, here is Ralph Stanley playing the tune. The title may actually just be “Black Eyed Susie” https://youtu.be/944pEHRrUo0

Turns out I had the mic on the wrong setting AGAIN. Before I stream again I will have to figure this out, hate subjecting yall to audio problems.

Clifton Hicks

I can play Black Eyed Suzie but never heard of Black Eyed Sussie Brown.

Clifton Hicks

You can still use fingerpicks to play two-finger. The other thing to try is a wider spaced bridge. Try ordering a bridge with wider "Crowe" spacing instead of standard spacing. If the strings are too narrow for your left hand, however, you'll have to install a new nut (with wider spacing) or try a different banjo with wider neck.

Clifton Hicks

Mollie, I didn't see you at all in there! Not sure what happened. Don't feel bad, I screwed up the audio AGAIN...

Clifton Hicks

I must of done something wrong, I posted a question on the Youtube chat, but couldn't find it after the session ended and wasn't listed as a participant. Maybe there were too many to answer and it dropped off. Maybe I am technically challenged -- more likely. Maybe I need to make a donation for the question to show? Hope to have better luck next time.

As someone who has practiced bluegrass banjo with finger picks, I saw your video about it limiting what you can do with a banjo.. I agree with that, and tried thumb-lead (?) but am struggling to get my sausage thumb to cleanly pick a string. Is this to be expected or is it worth looking at a banjo where the strings are spaced out a bit further?

Jake Rowsell

Clif have you ever done a version of “Black eyed Sussie Brown”?

William Riley

sounds good with the mic back
