A.C. Fairbanks "Companion Style C" Banjo (1890s)

Here's a fine, lightweight intermediate banjo made sometime after Fairbanks & Cole dissolved their partnership in 1890. This "Companion Style C" banjo still has the original head, celluloid tuners, and tailpiece. We've set it up with nylon strings and an antique, European maple bridge. The fingerboard looks like true ebony, but the peghead overlay and heel cap are clearly a faux ebony.

What tuning was that for “Jesus on the mainline”?

Jim Ramser

Honestly, David, there's so much variety--not only in the structure and manufacturing techniques, but in the repairs and aftermarket mods--that it's difficult to say. I think everyone would agree that SS Stewart emerged in the 1880s as the premiere maker, but at the same time you had makers like JB Schall and Fairbanks & Cole, who some would say offered a superior product. Then when Cole split from Fairbanks in 1890, both companies began producing banjos that many would agree were superior to Stewart's. Then in '98 Stewart died, and a "Stewart" banjo really ceased to be a real Stewart, etc. etc. etc... It's a very complicated subject.

That’s a fine looking banjo. I’m glad it’s already sold—I was afraid I might break down and try to buy it.

What fundament tonality changes are there with different models / manufacturers Clifton? Do you find depth / treble / midrange difference (for example?

David Clapp

Wow! nice banjo! I'm searching some informations or original catalogs about A.C. Fairbanks and Fairbanks & Cole banjos, .... Im searching so, 24 antique hooks and nuts for mine, a 1898's A.C. Fairbanks Senator, a short scale quite similar of the S.C. Thompson (Cole) that you show in a video.

It's a good little banjo. We sold it cheap to one of our patrons out in Oregon.
