"False Hearted Lover's Blues" Lesson

eCFGC ~ f♯DGAD. I learned "False Hearted Lover's Blues" from the original recording by Dock Boggs (banjo) and Emry Arthur (guitar). My understanding is that they recorded it in Chicago around 1927.

Never mind the singing, I’d be very pleased to get the tune down. Nearly there in the space of 2 hrs… lovely tune! Many thanks from the UK Clifton!

Henk

Right on Thank you, I’ve got my work cut out for me for the weekend.

You can play tons of stuff. I think I played "Death and the Lady" in this tuning. You can also play "Moonshiner," "Southern Texas," "Two White Horses," "Bloody Bill Anderson," and many others.

Clifton Hicks

I’m wondering what else you can play out of this tuning that isn’t one of those three dock Boggs songs?

DYLAN DOWD

This is fantastic Clifton! Thanks for providing some instructions for one of my favorites!

I have been working for hours on this and finally got it where I liked it. Had to capo up 2 for my voice. This is one of those times, Clifton where I have to let go of what you are doing and make it my own...it should be every time, but sometimes I like the way you play things so much that I want it to sound EXACTLY like yours.

Wonderful!! Now that there is an old timey that stirs the folky heart. What a dark lamenting sound. They don't make them like that anymore. Thank you Clifton for this lesson and the video.

I been watching your lessons for a while and I understood you don't intend us to play any piece note to note like you or anybody. I play the basic arrangement and add some Texas twang.

Texas Mopar

Yes, you can see and hear him filling in frequently. He also would alternate between bass string and picking 1st-2nd strings simultaneously, which I emulate with two fingers. This was the first banjo technique I ever learned.

I never noticed before that they are basically the same tune. I'm sure they could be played in numerous tunings.

Clifton Hicks

That’s awesome!

Another question if you have time: This melody sounds similar to Darling Corey. Can you play that one in the same tuning?

Daniel Pearce

Wonderful! Did Doc Boggs do 3 finger rolls as 'filler' in the way you do 2 finger rolls? I guess the lead must be the melody which remains the same ...
