"Sally Goodin" (Rooster Crow) Performance

I learned "Sally Goodin" years ago from a recording of Hiram Stamper (1893-1992) of Knott County, Kentucky. I played it in standard tuning (gDGBD) but eventually lost interest, as I often did with fiddle tunes.

A year ago I saw Aaron Stephens perform it on the banjo as "Rooster Crow," and Aaron directed me to his source, a recording of Uncle Dave Macon titled "Rooster Crow Medley."

My instrument here is an early 2000s Terry Bell minstrel banjo tuned ~ eAEAC♯ (relative gCGCE). Eddie Haggard called this tuning "No Finger C."

That is a pine bridge that came with the banjo. I assume Terry Bell made it.

Which Joel Hicks bridge to ya got there Clifton? Is that one the Converse?

The transition is challenging but fun and rewarding. I encourage everyone to own a frettless banjo.

I'm obsessed with these fretless minstrel banjos. My Goodtime with steel strings is a joy but this is the sound I've fallen in love with. I'll get one eventually when I'm not so damn poor lol I've never touched a fretless banjo. How does playing one with nylon/nylgut compare to your typical fretted instrument? Is it a difficult transition?
