"Sugar Hill"

I learned "Sugar Hill" from Matt Kinman and Josh Hayes in Watauga County, North Carolina (summer, 2008). Kinman, originally from Arizona, played the fiddle; Hayes, from Wilkes County, played the banjo. They took turns singing all of the verses that they knew.

Nice. Basically a mash up of Going to Rocky Island and Angeline the Baker.

Same here. I guess this is actually a rougher version than what I mostly hear. Learned this one from Matt Kinman (fiddle) and Josh Hayes (banjo) first night I hung out with them on my porch in Boone, summer 2008. They sang all the rough lyrics about "if you want to get your eye knocked out" and "if you want to get your head cut off." And I think through most of the 1800s $2 was the going rate for prostitutes, hence he has a dollar in his bill (billfold/wallet), and if he had a dollar more he'd climb up Sugar Hill.

I always love the rowdiness of this tune
