While we wait on that, I was thinking that this month, we could do a sort of mini-tangent-palooza: a sort of edited sample platter where I provide brief (ish?) coverage of a variety of topics at your request in a single bonus episode. A charcuterie board of politics, culture, and the internet.

Specifically, I've been thinking a lot recently about how being a Jew these days feels closely mirrored to my experience being a white woman in terms of having an identity that does face challenges to some degree but whose challenges are also corrupted in order to persecute or justify violence against others, for example how crime against white women is used to persecute Black men by people who don't meaningfully care about women at all. Idk if that makes sense, also definitely not the most important issues to discuss rn, just would be curious to hear a discussion about past and present uses of (semi?) marginalized groups to justify harming other marginalized groups, entrenching the system with the guise of caring about people?

She is a college professor accused of killing her Boston cop boyfriend, and she is currently fighting against the cops and others in the system, saying that this was set up by them and that she was framed. It’s a huge cop cover up story, but what really interests me is that the biggest supporters of Karen are MAGA “back the blue” people, and it’s so weird and confusing. Very interesting deep dive case for anyone who hasn’t heard of it!

2024-10-07 07:39:25 +0000 UTCHi, I recently had a discussion with a queer friend from the older millennial spectrum about Ellen Degeneres and how her "downfall" is a typical example of how the business treats successful (queer) women and how no one would seriously accuse a straight cis male comedian of being "mean" because it's such a shallow, meaningless accusation that would never seriously hurt a cis man's image. My friend was angry that from his perspective Gen Z in particular doesn't understand what it “owes” to some older queer people in public life and puts them down instead of giving them some grace. I would be very interested in your perspective on the topic of how to deal with older icons who are not in tune with the zeitgeist in all nuances and generational differences in general.

While various issues plaguing queers, trans people and BIPOC folks are at the forefront of a lot of conversations right now, there’s very little focus on what sex workers specifically are facing in today’s political climate. It would literally be a dream come true if you collaborated with SW activist Pomma (@onlypomma on IG) and used your incredible platform to educate people about what sex workers are going through. I would cry happy tears for days! Issues like de-platforming, how the upcoming election may affect our jobs, FOSTA/SESTA, how SW is often conflated with trafficking, our desire for total decriminalization instead of legalization (or any form of criminalization, including the Nordic model), how the stigma surrounding SW actually hurts victims of trafficking, how sex workers are never at the forefront of conversations that affect us… etc. etc. If you couldn’t collaborate with a SW’er for whatever reason (which I would highly recommend doing — nothing about us without us!) then I would say do some reading of books by SW’ers to gain an understanding of some issues. The book “Revolting Prostitutes” by Molly Smith and Juno Mac is an amazing resource that touches on some REALLY important stuff worldwide, even though those authors are based out of the UK. The book “Red Light Labour - Sex Work Regulation, Agency and Resistance” is fantastic too. It focuses on Canada, but has so much information of relevance to the lives of SW’s worldwide as well.
