Quetzal | Gacha-like Illustration (Blender and more!)

Tried to do gacha-like illustration, and tried my hands on creating the background in blender!

I went on to find a motif that interests me, some sort of an exploration of ancient civilization, since my OC was supposed to be an early 19th-century-meets-modern explorer/archeologist.

So I got to working on a sketch:

I wanted to emphazise the mayan stone face totems as well as the stone sun disc on the floor. After that I went on to blender.

As artists, blender can be a powerful tool, depending on the usage.

I only needed to learn how to operate and memorize the shortcuts.

First I sculpted basic shapes for the ground, stairs and the pillars.

Next I added in some vines and trees by importing free assets I found online.

And that was it! Put in some textures for the rocks and trees, add and fix the lighting and you're good to render!

The rendering part was actually slow, i only had an average 6-core prossesor to boot so it took around 2 hours to render the image.

Also if I hadn't optimized the lighting and render settings, it would have taken about 13+ hours! Imagine having a slow pc!

But of course there is always a workaround, I could always screenshot the pre-render and work on that, but doing so I won't be able to have a clean png transparent background.

So I waited.

And the render is done!

Now I could work off this.

Several hours later, after adjustments and a bunch of painting over, I had this:

Now the bg is more in-line to my initial sketch!

Then the concept with my OC:

And then after that, render my OC, add some flavour text, and we're done!

It was fun working with blender, there are times I got stumped on how to do things, but a youtube tutorial or two never fails!

Here is the timelapse (of the painting, I wish I had recorded my screen while doing blender, but that would have added more load to my poor workstation.)

Here's my blender file in case you'd like to snoop around: (you need blender installed to open this)

(also the textures might break since you'll have to have them in your blender already)
