I have to tell the meaning behind you’re on your own, kid because I also didn’t understand it at first but when it clicks it’s sooo good. the first verse is her in high school in her small town, she’s at a party searching for the guy she has a crush on and sees girls way prettier than her and it seems like maybe he never met up with her or just didn’t pay any attention to her. the second verse describes her using that feeling to write songs and “something different bloomed” she decided to pursue her dreams of being a singer instead. but throughout the process, she discovers there are other girls prettier and better than her that want the same thing. her dreams aren’t rare so she has to work even harder. by the bridge, she tells the story of how she made it to the top but it came at a price. “I gave my blood sweat and tears for this. I hosted and parties and starved my body” she endured misogyny and the constant serial dater/crazy girl jokes that she laughed along with or played into “the jokes weren’t funny, I took the money” aka record deals and business opportunities. but ultimately the highs outweighed the lows. she doesn’t regret it. she made her dreams come true. it’s a very bittersweet song 🥹

I have to say I always thought Taylor Swift was an amazing song writer, however I never really listened to her much because I was not a fan of her voice. I was having a panic attack and trying to distract me I decided to watch this video (I have been listening to Midnight non-stop and didn't want to watch a reaction before I really got the album), now I'm feeling emotional in the best way, once again that amazing swiftie connection, thank you. Sir, the bingo cage. LOL! I heard reputation as soon as the album started too! I'm still adjusting to all the new lyrics and sonics, but this bodes well for the long term for me. I recognize that this makes me sound pretty square, but I listened to both the explicit and clean versions of the album last night. I think I like "Snow on the Beach" better clean. It's such a tender love song that the F-bomb is a bit jarring. There's also the lyric "Vegas acrobat" in "Karma," which I think is pretty good too. I also stayed up until 2:30 CDT to listen to the 7 bonus tracks. I am running on fumes. There were a few clues on social media that hinted at a double album. The official hashtag was #TSmidnighTS, doubling the TS. There was at least one tweet from Taylor Nation with two clocks. There was a tweet from Aaron Dessner that "things aren't necessarily how they seem." There were plenty more little things like that. I'm sure there is a YouTuber or TikToker that has put it all together! As always, thanks for your excellent reviews and the timeliness of this one!

ahh glad to be experiencing taylor with you again! i agree with you that some of those songs in the middle weren't my favorite but i do appreciate her choosing to be vulnerable with us. that takes a lot of courage from anyone but especially doing that when you already have so many eyes on you has to be a lot and that isn't lost on me. i agree on all the favorites and labyrinth also brought me to tears. that fear of breaking down your walls and being real and falling love with someone when you've been hurt and burned so many times before is such a real and relatable feeling. and man sweet nothings is just so beautiful and the fact that her and joe wrote that one together makes me so emotional and happy for her. thanks for once again taking the time to give a great reaction and i cant wait to see how you feel about the 3am songs!

i loved the album after the first listen, but now spending even more time with it (still less than 24 hours LOL), it is such a grower. the things i found a bit different at first are now some of my favorite things!!
