Taylor Swift - Midnights 3AM Tracks

Comments

Yes, he talked during a custom request a few months ago. I think it was when I requested Taylor and Mary J. Blige.

Julie B

You know if he's ever gotten to go? I can't seem to find any video of his reaction to the tour since it started, or just his thoughts on it. I'd just like to see since he's gushed quite a bit on how he wanted to see Taylor live.

I just want to say that The Great War is my favorite song on Midnights, maybe my favorite song of hers ever. I'm a huuuge history buff and there's a myriad of WWI references in there, which makes the depth of their meaning so much more powerful to me! Firstly, 'the Great War' is what people called WWI before there was a second war, and naming it this is so powerful in context of the breakup; when you're in it, you're grateful that that war is over, but retrospectively, Taylor's got that looming fear (like Out of the Woods) of a greater loss. 'Took the battle underground' - in WWI the fighting above ground was so deadly they had to dig trenches to survive 'tears on the letter' - there's a wealth of correspondence from WWI on all sides, and many of the soldiers did their best to be encouraging while at the same time in deep fear for their lives 'you drew up some good faith treaties' - the Treaty of Versailles (ending WWI by declaring Germany culpable) was for many in retrospect, *not* a good faith treaty. This is interesting, because like the title, it implies that she may see them both as responsible for the fight even though on the surface, she's taking responsibility. This is mirrored in 'your finger on my hairpin triggers' too. There's a well-known very bad gun that was issued to some of the troops in WWI so this could also (deep cut) allude to the idea that there's a flaw in the manufacturing 'place a poppy in my hair' - in the UK, Remembrance Day is specifically for WWI losses, IIRC, and the poppy is a big symbol of that day. Joe Alwyn is from the UK, so this shows, to me, the depth of his influence on her writing. She's entrenched (ha) in the culture of their relationship. Love your reactions, not sure you'll see this after so long but I have been meaning to write down my thoughts about this song for a while so I'm happy to have gotten the chance!

I feel like dear reader (especially after the news about joe) is so severely underrated. She’s saying guys don’t listen to me, I’m falling apart. Like she doesn’t want to be responsible for us following her steps.

Really enjoyed my first time watching your Patreon reaction to Queen Taylor. The depth in which you address her lyricism is phenomenal. I have watched so many reactions who skim over, and sometimes outright ignore her pen game! Might as well not listen if they dismiss her writing. But you really delve into her words, and that's when I decided to join your patreon. Keep up the great work.

I loved relistening with you! And I appreciate the Glitch love. So experimental and not Taylor but totally Taylor. The nods to John, Calvin and Tom intrigue me with the re-recordings. The project as I view it had to grow on me, but Dear Reader, Paris, and the aforementioned are fabulous! Sadly Bigger than the Whole Sky is like not hitting. It's so mundane. Idk maybe not my trauma or production. I'm offended the one dislike is a fucking Jack song. This would've been a great bridge EP leading into Midnights. Solo I'd like it more because the original 13 are so tight and pristine. This isn't bonus track bullshit. Taylor gave us a double concept album basically. Like fuck her, she's the best human lolz. Proud Swiftie for almost a decade.

SHES GOING ON TOUR MICHAEL THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Nicolett

MICHAEL! Taylor just announced tour dates! You need to register as a verified fan by next Wednesday. Log into your Ticketmaster account to do it.

Amazing reaction as always! Thank you for keeping it real :) The whole album including these songs is incredibile and it just keeps growing and growing on me.. From these, my favorites are Paris (I just love it, hope it grows on you), great war, would've could've should've, dear reader.. Also would love to watch you react to the music videos for bejeweled and anti Hero :)

Talía Caraveo

I was introduced to Eurovision through the Overthinking It channel. They do summaries and highlights. (Not sure if they covered this year's tho.) Those might be good falling asleep videos... Except maybe the metal. 🤔🤔🤔😆

FlyUshkiFly

I wish you could have just watched the entire BTS fork Vlive. Jungkook really amused himself. You have so much to watch across all artists! Do you ever feel totally overwhelmed?? I hope this is your full-time job. I can't remember if I've ever heard that...

FlyUshkiFly

You don't even know the floodgate you've opened requesting Jin and Jungkook (Jinkook) interaction content! They are the same mental age, and having each other gives both exactly what they need to stay sane. Jin is the maknae of his family, so he needed a playmate to give him a break from being hyung, and Jungkook needed someone to roughhouse with - like a puppy nipping at his brother. Hehe Add in Jimin, and it guilds the lily. 😆

FlyUshkiFly

I would also like to know! I joined Beveraggi's Patreon for the HSMTMTS reactions

To me, after several listens, "Would've, Could've, Should've" is starting to feel somewhat near the level of greatness that is "All Too Well." Which is something I never thought I'd say about any song. "You call me up again just to break me like a promise" and "Give me back my girlhood; it was mine first" - How the songs build to those moments and how those lines are placed perfectly within the songs and sung in a similar tone makes these moments of these 2 songs hit me similarly. I am really thankful and amazed that Taylor created these 2 songs. All-time great songs in music history, in my opinion, which is clearly biased because everybody's opinion is biased....which leads me to: It’s amazing to me how different people can love and loathe the same song. Just goes to show that music is deeply subjective. I’m glad for the people who love the songs I don’t, and I am glad Vigilante Shit exists for me to love, even though you hate it. 😂 Edit: Also this is a complete side note, but I'm not a part of your Film tier and I just saw you're reacting to Hill House. I am concerned for you. It seems EXTREMELY unwise to watch this given you are scared by much less scary things 😩

Soren

Is there a way to turn on captions on the Patreon video service? The captions you sometimes have on your Vimeo videos help me a lot

Soren

do you know when we are getting hsmtmts ?

Jayla

Finally someone else who also loves Glitch. Also was I the only one anxious the whole time about you knocking that candle over with your elbow?

Liz N

I honestly don’t look at these as typical bonus tracks. I think all of them were good enough to be a regular album track. Although with that being said, Taylor’s version (no pun intended) of a bonus track is a bit different than most other people’s bonus tracks. Some of my favorite Taylor songs are bonus tracks. I mean New Romantics, The Moment I Knew, and Right Where You Left Me weren’t on the standard album just to name a few. How are songs of that quality supposed to be considered bonus tracks? We’ll just have to agree to disagree on Paris though. I love that song. Also, I’m sure someone’s probably mentioned it by now but there is one more Midnights song. It’s a Target exclusive called Hits Different.

Jared Scoggin

I completely agree on the album growing and having a completely different experience on second, third, fourth, etc listen. It's just that you are so honest, real and and so into it with your content that it's easy to feel connected and feel you while you do your thing. At least that's why I love your content. PS: Vigilante Shit and Paris are also the only tracks I don't vibe with, with the additional 3AM tracks this album shot up to my top 3 Taylor albums along with 1989 and Speak Now. What Taylor is doing is The Beatles/John Lennon level to me.

TSTS1989

HOLY FOLKLORE! Lmao that cracked me up. Thanks for the reaction, it was great! My favs of the 3AM are for sure Bigger Than The Whole Sky, Would've Could've Should've and Dear Reader. I think that one will sneak up on you and grab you after a while :)

Myrthe

Loved all of this of course, but. Interesting to note that Taylor references moonstone on the main album (like the name of the standard edition of Midnights) and then blood moon on these 3 AM tracks (one of the names of special editions of the album). She didn't name drop jade or mahogany, the other two special editions. No idea what it means, but it's been on my mind.

Ellis Hale

my love for this entire album also continues to grow exponentially with every listen! for me this is now a no skip album 100% (ps i also thought it was panties instead of pennies literally until you said it wasn’t 😭)

Jenna

High infidelity reminds me of my mom. Not every line of course, but the "You said I was freeloading, I didn't know you were keeping count" and "the picket fence was sharp as knives" and "i'd pay if you'd just know me" and of course the chorus about killing the one you love. i know thats not what she wrote the song about, but I found thats how i related to it. I'm happy i moved across the country, but man, what I would do for a mother who loved me without keeping count.

Abbey H.

Highly suggest listening to 29 by Demi Lovato. Such a good song. I do love these 3am tracks so much.

Tessa Noble

Loved your reaction (as usual). I do think I love the 3 am songs more than the original songs, but like you—the whole album is growing on me more and more as I listen to it. By the way, the Patreon video looks like it works great! And can't wait for more of you reactions, especially the custom requests. I changed it up a little.

CGoerlich

I think Dear Reader is about the time period she talked about in Miss Americana when she was winning awards and realized she had nobody to call and was alone at the top and how she sees that as a reason the fans shouldn’t take her advice or use her as a guiding light.

Jalesa Sims

"The Great War" was the name for WWI prior to WWII. There are several other allusions to WWI in the song, including memory gardens and poppies. I never thought Taylor Swift would write a WWI jam, but here we are. I really like how she plays on the phrase "High Fidelity" by talking about records and headphones. Changing it to "infidelity" is a really clever switch up. I listened to the 3 a.m. tracks at 2 a.m. my time last Friday. I was in a complete fog, and the only thing that really cut through was "Would've, Could've, Should've." There were break-up songs on 1989 and beyond, but they were mostly expressing sadness and regret. This song is just caustic. I don't think we've heard anything like it since Speak Now or RED. It's definitely my favorite of the 3 a.m. tracks. It's worth mentioning that Demi Lovato recently released a song called "29" on the same topic. I think the reason that both Demi and Taylor are tackling these subjects again is because now they are the same age as the men in their lives during their teen years. There is nothing like time to give you perspective on how messed up a situation was.

Julie B

only taylor can make "somewhere else" rhyme with "paris". her mind

grace

you realizing which song was the one about jm shouldn't have had me laughing bc it's a serious song but your face is just so memeable in the moment i couldn't help it. like you said so many of these songs are so so powerful. i love how vulnerable she's been with us in this midnights era. i think glitch and dear reader have been my favorites off the 3am edition.

ariel

The second I finished Would've, Could've, Should've I knew it was one of the best songs she's ever written. I hope it is a comfort for those who have experienced grooming, and it serves as an important explanation to people as to what being groomed feels like. I really admire Taylor for releasing it

Erica

Great reaction as always. Will you be reacting to the two music videos? Really great.

Richard

Also agree that I would love to see your reaction to the Anti-Hero and Bejeweled music videos! :D

Rebecca H

Your dog is so cute! <3 And I think these are all amazing tracks too, I think my favourites at the moment are The Great War, Would've, Could've, Should've, and Paris (although I agree perhaps putting it after Bigger Than The Whole Sky probably doesn't work best :D ). I thought of miscarriage too when I first listened to Bigger Than The Whole Sky, even if you just listen to it thinking of grief and loss in general it's so powerful and beautiful, and like you say, it's wonderful that she's created a song that can comfort people in their grief. I love how she experiments and creates new sounds with a lot of the songs on Midnights, and Glitch is definitely a great use of that!

Rebecca H

Jin just released a solo single called 'the astronaut'. it'd be great if you could check it out :)

Raven

high infidelity and Would've, Could've, Should've have quickly become some of my favorite taylor songs ever tbh. In general, I found midnights to be one of, if not THE most vulnerable Taylor's ever shown us and I really appreciate her for sharing all of this. (Also the player works just fine!)

Giu Bressani

Oh really? Thank you for letting me know👍🏼😊

Bangtan is life

Met Gala in 2016 was May 2nd. But April 29th was Gigi Hadid's birthday party and there are talks of Taylor actually meeting Joe for the first time there and not at the Met as people always guessed

Giu Bressani

I have to come here only 15 minutes into the video to say I really appreciative the new video posting service!

Jenna

The moment you figure out which song was about JM! Oof that one is a doozy.

Amanda Zilke

The 3am songs are so good, some of her best on the album! Dear Reader is 100% one that grew on me. I didn’t love it the first time I listened to it but the more I listen the more I appreciate it and it’s one of my most played now. I think it’s a good song representing her anxiety and the self-loathing she spoke about as a theme of this album, of feeling like she’s writing these songs and giving advice to her fans but behind the scenes she is falling apart and doesn’t believe people should listen to her advice and find another person to guide them. It’s so great the more you listen and pick up what’s she communicating

Mikaela Cookson

yay!! <3

Lailah

The new patreon video worked really well for me. Might just be my phone, but the picture and sound quality seemed higher 😊

Valerie Schmoyer

I'm so glad someone else appreciated the lyrics "there's many different ways that you can kill the one you love, the slowest way is never loving them enough." That just hit me in the gut, and everyone else just skips past it. I love when you react to Taylor. Are you doing her music videos next? She has 2 out right now.

Brianna

I love the use of effects on her vocals for the Dear Reader outro! To me, it sounds like how a mirrorball looks-- reflecting light but never giving a true picture-- her 'normal' voice is never truly clear, yet it's still beautiful.

Lindsay Taylor

High infidelity is actually about Taylor herself, April 29th is when she met Tom Hiddleston at the Met gala while she was dating Calvin. But guess who else she also met at the Met gala? No other then Joe Alwyn himself 😂 We as a fandom has decided not to ask too much about Bigger Than The Whole Sky or rank it since it’s such a personal song, but it has been described that it could be about a miscarriage but we don’t know who’s or if it’s just in general message for those who need it. My favorites are The Great War and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, although I do love them all💜

Bangtan is life

Your reaction to these 3am tracks and especially Great War and Wouldve, Couldve, Shouldve was everything I was waiting for because I knew just how much you would love the lyrical genius that she put into those songs.

Laurel Thomson

i’m dying at you moving your candle and beatboxing to the beat and then realizing that it was THE song 😭
