RM - Mono | Full Album Reaction

wow

Comments

You really should check eAeon album Guilt-Free, this is one of the most sonicly interesting albums from korean musician i discovered thanks to BTS, i especially love songs 5 in 4, Drug and Bulletproof

Oleksandra Yakubenko

this is my favorite solo project as well! couldn't agree with you more- as a night owl myself and someone who has struggled with mental health for as long as i can remember, this is my comfort album. i always find myself coming back to it because it's relatable and uplifting without being too annoyingly optimistic, and he's perfectly captured what it's like to be a young person just trying to find their way in the world and all that comes with it: feelings of not being enough, not knowing who you are, dealing with hardships, facing your inner darkness, etc. it's a criminally underrated masterpiece in my opinion

Amber

As far as I know he never said he regretted mono! Just his first mixtape! Though he did once say he didn’t quite ‘get it’ with mono but thought he did with indigo and I loveeee indigo but sir we do not take any mono slander even from you! She is a masterpiece. Lol

chimelle6

Finally, the masterpiece that is mono. It made me so sad that RM could have possibly regretted mono. I believe mono deserves a Grammy. It’s so good. And I knew right away when I first heard and listened to it non stop and still pull it up whenever it rains or if I’m feeling down or reflective.

Ochuko Inabowa

Thank you for sharing and being vulnerable with us. It's not the easiest thing to do. Seeing you so affected by this album brought me right back to when I first heard it. I really do think Mono is a masterpiece. It's my number one album out of all BTS related albums (group and solo). My dad passed away a week before Mono came out and it got me through that time and for that reason I don't think any will ever beat it.

Lisa

This album - Forever Rain specifically - brought me through the worst moments after my 21yr old fur baby died. It was right around there that I watched the Save Me MV and fell headlong into the rabbit hole.

FlyUshkiFly

Every time I feel sad or depressed I listen this album, and I always end up crying, but after that I feel sooo much better. For me it’s my comfort album. Also it’s definitely one of my fave projects of the boys.

valeria castillo

god that album is just soooo comforting... he's not telling you to get better or get over it, it's just him telling you "i see you, i understand you, i'm with you" and it makes all the difference

Caroline B.

What a great description. 🥺🥹💜💚

chimelle6

omg, im so glad you finally reacted to this. This album is my comfort album. I adore him so much.

Hailey Lee

If you’re not deep in your feelings by the end of mono did you actually even listen to the album? Whenever I listen to it (or any bts album but the feeling is strongest with mono) I always feel like I’ve flailing my hand out desperately as I try to make it through a dark point in life and then suddenly someone is holding my hand. Not to save me but just for comfort, to feel that someone else is going through it with me - the good and the bad. You can just FEEL down to your bones that you’re not alone in whatever you’re experiencing. It’s been an everthinggoes on loop sort of week for me so this was particularly timely. Thank you for a great video!

Em

what a treat, been waiting forever for this one. as someone who is also going through a garbage time personally im glad this album has found you when it needed to (also re moonchild - studies have shown people with adhd have a delayed circadian rhythm compared to neurotypicals so we tend to be more active at night)

Vanessa

Mono is my comfort album and Rm is my comfort artist. When ever I'm going through a hard time I throw on this album and cry with RM. At the end I feel like ive just gotten a big warm hug. I will always love and be so grateful to RM for sharing this with us.

Amanda Ramos

i wasn't even an 'army' yet, just had started casually listening to bts and heard RM had an album so I turned it on one day while I was cleaning -- I started crying before the first track was even over. It captures so much sadness and so much comfort all at once. You are not the first person to describe it as a 'hug'. It carries so much sadness without being "dark". It's.... yeah..... it's everything. I'm sure by now you've heard the saying "we find BTS when we need them most." Maybe you found "mono" when you needed it most. 💜 thank you for sharing it with us About his first mixtape RM -- a few comments have said the lyrics aren't as good or the main point of it, etc., but i strongly disagree. I love that album lyrically too. Even though it is braggadocios, it is also deeply introspective. And his 'bragging' is so clearly fighting back against a hatred and trying to stand up for himself. Sometimes that's exactly what I need in a day. He also works a lot with paradox and contradictions as he always does. He's so good at capturing how we often feel two contradictory things at the same time. Anyway - just wanted to shout out his first mixtape! even if he wishes he could erase it, I'm so glad it exists and I gain a lot of strength from it.

pebble

I really needed this, I've also been having a hard time like the past month and a half for several different reasons, and it's been a while since I heard these songs all together. mono is such a space for comfort for me and so many people. Namjoon's words always make me feel like I'm not alone. Something I find comfort in are metaphors about nature and I loved that he used them in everythinggoes, because we come from nature and if we observe it, the cycles, it's always the same; even if we may not believe that things can change, nature proves to us that the most certain thing in life is that absolutely everything is always changing, that's why it's so comforting. It's like he's saying ''if you don´t believe me look outside''. I like to interpret ''ash'' as mortality, when he says we all should be ash or ''ashy world'' Ithink of it as everything should come to an end eventually, which is a topic he talked about in his previous mixtape ''life is more beautiful because everyone has death as collateral'' which also goes with the whole concept of darkness and light, ying and yang. Life is about balance, if you think about it, we love because we're not eternal, same as we are able to feel joy and gratitude because we also feel sadness and pain. Life is about the contrast, the contrast is what defines our reality, if everything was pure light or pure darkness we wouldn't be able to make up anything, and literally speaking, we wouldn't be able to see. If we lived forever, nothing would have a point anymore, same as if we were happy forever, happiness itself would lose any meaning. That's why I feel this album is so special, it highlights the contrast of life in so many ways, and how important it is. Even tho we may hate it sometimes, it's necessary, and hearing and being reminded of that it's so incredibly comforting. I'm glad you listened to this album at this exact time Michael.

blue side

I have this album on heavy rotation in my playlists because it is oddly sad yet soothing and feels like RM is right there beside me in my struggle. I have so much respect for him. I am glad you felt the connection you did to this special piece of work. 🤗

JJ

i dedicated my first tattoo to forever rain, even though i always said i would never be the type to get anything show, music, or celeb- related LOL i just never loved any media as much as i did when this came out. this mixtape was probably the first to have such a gigantic impact on me and it was probably also what first helped me realize that i was going thru depression at the time,, i forever owe namjoon for this!

beth

i legit cry EVERY single time i listen to 'everythingoes' because like you, when i first listened to this album i was going through somethings, and the song itself just feels like a warm reassuring hug that everything really will be ok and i really needed that. I also plan on my first tattoo being an homage to this song by getting "지나가 everythingoes" on my inner arm to look at and remind myself whenever i feel that way again. I just love this song so freakin much and I am glad that it was also able to help you aswell

Sydnee R

This album came out when I was going through it pretty bad, and I genuinely cannot even begin to tell you how much everythinggoes helped me. The lyricism, and the melody made me cry every single time. The repetition he added to the track also made me BELIEVE that everything was going to be ok. One of my favorite songs of all time, I still listen to it every time i'm feeling sad. RM is quite literally a lyrical genius.

victoria

this album means the world to me and will always do:) i got everythingoes tattooed almost two years ago, my forever comfort song <3

signe !

this was really comforting to watch, thank you so much Michael! also i hope your struggles do get better and that you might have found a bit of comfort in these songs💜 i think it takes a lot of courage to be as transparent as you are! personally i see the album as a way for RM to explore the pains and reliefs of being alive and experiencing all of those emotions that come with it.

Maria

Oh, I'm listening to Stationhead! I haven't listened to regular radio in years :-D

Keisha L

Fun fact: Mono. has gone #1 on iTunes in more countries than any other album in history (at least I don't think it has been passed?), which I love because it means lots of people have been able to be comforted as well. I think prior it had been tied with Adele's 25 and Taylor Swift's Reputation.

chimelle6

Also, might I recommend, when you're having a hard time to take a drive at night and listen to the album start to finish. Especially, if it is raining, though be safe, of course. I don't think anything can affect me quite like that can in those moments. And as others have said thank you for being so open about when you're struggling, I know that isn't easy.

chimelle6

Since you have heard them all now, prior to the newer albums coming out army used to have a saying to describe each rapper's mixtape/playlist (joon called mono a playlist): Hope World: life sucks lets dance the pain away Agust D: life sucks lets scream/break stuff Mono.: life sucks let me sit beside you I might be a little off, but something along those lines. I think they're perfect -simple- descriptors for each album. Mono really is the perfect journey through depression and a hand to hold through it though. It starts out with darker songs and being in that state of just not feeling like yourself and going through darkness with each song having different stages or feelings in that state, but with bits of comfort like 'its okay to shed the tears but don't you tear yourself' but never never telling you its okay or to get over it or ignore the darkness then getting into everythingoes where, yes he is telling you it'll be okay, but in the most gentle way. I love the way it starts out with him saying 'It all passes, someday, for sure, certainly' like he is trying to convince even himself. but isn't that the most comforting? hearing it from someone that understand and has felt that way? and you do have to keep reminding yourself like that. I love forever rain coming after. I know a lot of people that are confused by that because you finally reached that happiness and out of the darkness moment, but if it ended there I think it would be unrealistic. You will have more dark times and I think forever rain shows that, but it doesn't make the lightness of everythingoes any less. Anyways, I just love that storytelling. Obviously, there is a lot more to it, but the over arching 'theme'.

chimelle6

the repetition and comfort in everythingoes reminds me a bit of 'everything will be ok' being repeated so many times in Snooze by Yoongi. The comfort they provide is infinite.

SeaLights

Yess!! I think some of the other uses of it are death/becoming part of the earth again that kind of thing (he has brought up death a few times, one example being in wildflower, but in kind of a positive way - like a mindset idk how to say it but it seems to be a reoccurring guiding light and way to stay grounded), the dirtiness of a city, and needing to live in that middle area or accepting the two extremes to reach to become that middle area.

chimelle6

Wait, mono came on the radio? Where do you live? That is amazing! I need to rewatch that live!

chimelle6

RM's mixtape (titled 'RM') was more of a traditional mixtape where he was showing off his rapping skills over other people's beats... though there are still some lyrical gems in there, because it's still RM. But 'mono' is definitely the first 'album' type mixtape where they're all original compositions and there's a coherent storyline/theme to the project. 'mono' as a whole is an amazing project that, as you discovered, is very much 'a friend in the darkness' - what I love about all the BTS members is that they never give platitudes like "cheer-up" instead they're like "wow, this really does suck - I'm right here with you - we're going to find our way through this together." But also it's about finding joy even in those dark times - one of my favourite lines from Moonchild is "even though we crash down, we're gonna dance in the plane". The ash line in tokyo, is "ash is a thing that one day we all should be" - which I interpret similarly to "everything goes" or "this will pass" - one day, we're all going to ashes (cremated). I'm not sure about the other ash lines though.

Alix Drifty

I think that what he means with love and hate are the same word, is that to him, loving and hating feels like the same. For example, bts are a group with so many haters, but those haters are jealous of the love they’re getting, they also have a fair amount of obsessive fans who attack everyone who gets close to them, even other members, stalkers who follows them everywhere, etc., so to them the attention they get is love and hate all together and he is saying, i think, sometimes he cannot differentiate one from the other in regard to Seul, I think we can all relate to the feeling of loving and hating your town, it happens to me, whenever there’s a protest that doesn’t let me get to work, when I’m stuck in traffic, I hate my city, but whenever I’m away for a long time I miss it terribly….

Barbi Duarte

And his world has gotten more colorful with indigo 🥺

chimelle6

I knew you would love this project, so glad you finally got to hear it (especially since it touched you the way it did). I know it has brought me a lot of comfort through various points of loneliness and grief I’ve gone through the past few years. He’s so empathetic and kind and genuine in his music, and honestly very wise. I struggle to believe he was 23/24 here. “Ash is a thing that someday we all should be” - to me means that death (and pain/suffering/darkness) is a natural part of life. Just like he says in everythingoes, all people and pain will eventually die, it’s right and good that life comes to an end at some point. Ash is of course grey and seen negatively/disgusting/depressing, but it represents death and the ending of things, and is very important for the balance in life. Like you said, he uses that theme a lot; I know he’s an atheist but it reminds me a lot of some beliefs in Buddhism. “We suffer to be glad”, “i know there is no forever”, “we dance through the pain”, “love and hate is the same word”, accepting contradictions and opposite concepts - all songs deal with this thought in my interpretation. “RM” is the name of his 2015 mixtape, released when he was 20 years old. I honestly recommend that one too, it has a different vibe but it’s cool to see how talented he already was back then and a lot of these topics can already be seen back then (mixed with some anger/bragging à la Agust D (2016) 😅

CC

Mono is a piece of art and packed with emotions. It is one of my favorite projects and it is able to give me so many healing moments since I first listened to it. I am so glad you check this one. Mono sticks with you.

Liuzetz

Firstly, <<<>>>. I’m sorry you’re going through it and I’m glad you found mono comforting. The first time I heard this album, I did so without lyrics. Sonically, it grabbed me right away and I needed to hear it first. Uhgood and everythingoes are my two favorite tracks both sonically and lyrically. I also love the album title, mono., which carries so many interpretations. Thank you, Michael!

Yukari

I think Ash is used in a lot of different ways and contexts in this album, but the thing that makes it relevant across the board is the grayness of ash. The colors represented throughout this album are black and white. Moon and sun. Suffering and gladness. If you mix those colors together you get grey. Grey like ashes.

Booryanne

this album saved my life, everythingoes in particular. im so glad you are checking this out. 💜💜

Mooni_moni

I love this album so much! Thanks for your reaction. There's not really much difference between mixtape and album except in the release and promotion, but just to organize things: - RM (mixtape), 2015 - mono (mixtape/playlist), 2018 - Indigo (album), 2022 You can check the RM tab on my content guide if you want links for the 2015 mixtape (or anything else). The lyric videos are from aftaehyung and Dial 6137. RM is originally from Ilsan (a satellite city northwest of Seoul), so the song Seoul expresses how he's gradually come to see Seoul as home (as opposed to him actually being from there) in addition to the complexity of that love/hate relationship. A few more tidbits (there are also links for these songs on the RM page in my guide if you ever need them): - eAeon, the featured artist on badbye, also co-wrote and produced Change Pt. 2 on Indigo. (In fact, I usually refer to Change Pt. 2 as Badbye Pt. 2, lol) They are good friends and also collaborated back in 2020 on eAeon's song Don't. - Seoul was co-written and produced by HONNE, the singer-songwriter duo who also co-wrote and produced Closer on Indigo. RM also featured on a version of HONNE's song Crying Over You (released in 2019). - When we saw the name Moonchild, a lot of us thought that it was a sequel to 4 O'Clock (RM's 2016 collab with V) since he uses the term in his verse there. However, RM mentioned that he actually wrote Moonchild earlier, so the lyric in 4 O'Clock can be seen as a hint/spoiler. (Lol, Moonchild just came on the radio as I was typing this.) - Here's a link to RM's livestream talking about mono: https://weverse.io/bts/live/4-104694125

Keisha L

thank you for being so transparent and open about your struggles this month. we love and support you and I honestly hope this time of agony will end soon and you will find yourself in a good place!!! it takes a lot of courage to share this with us and i pray your healing time begins immediatly and it shall last long💜 love you michael you do a lot for us even if you don’t know it

Yeontan™️

oh kind of MONOchromatic

Mariana

i actually have “moonchild” tatted on my arm in his handwriting bc i also felt SO REPRESENTED the first time i heard it. it’s my fav song from joon and i always have it on my top100 songs of the year on spotify even 5 years after the release of mono.

Yeontan™️

I’m not sure but I took him to referring to the world as “ashy”, to be like everything looks grey to him, there isn’t color or excitement in anything that he sees, or something along those lines.

Sunshine

this project is the definition of comfort. i'm happy you got the chance to listen to it, apparently in the time you needed the most 🫶 sending all the love!

donna

Everything Goes is like the equivalent of Suga's Snooze for me. Anyone can say 'its going to pass' or 'its going to be ok' and you can brush it off by saying 'yeah, i know' or 'no way'.. but something about the repetition forces you to not divert the subject and really deal with the emotion that you might otherwise set aside to avoid the uncomfortableness. It makes me think of that scene from Good Will Hunting when Robin Williams refuses to change the subject to hammer in the point that 'its not your fault'.

mFortyFive

yeah i think that makes sense maybe its ties intoo the ashes to ashes thing too. maybe it's the ashes of peoples broken dreams or something that stains the city

julian kristiansen rundhaug

i’m honestly so happy to see this notification. i’ve had a long and exhausting day and nothing could soothe me more than knowing this video is there for me when i get home. i’m so happy i could cry

Yeontan™️

Agreed!!

chimelle6

right? I think it's really important to see his growth, but also what he wanted to showcase back then in terms of messages and skills

Giu Bressani

This project always brings me comfort listening from start to finish. I especially love listening to it on rainy days. RM actually grew up in Ilsan, but then moved to Seoul. Also eAeon (the one in badbye) is cowriter and producer of change pt. 2 form Indigo. I'm glad you now have this album to bring you comfort as well 💜

Mariana

Yeah, this is the mixtape you were asking about. Joon has been saying for a while now that he wishes that ‘rm’ the mixtape would disappear off the face of the earth and I can understand why with the direction he has taken, like it doesn’t match with what he wants to put out into the world, but I personally still really like it and it shows how he has become really intentional in what we want to put into the world with his growth as a person.

chimelle6

Thank you for listening to mono, Michael! This is a project that also makes me feel seen, and I wish I'd had it for comfort when I was in my 20s and 30s when everything felt the most black and white all the time. My favorite artists are ones that, like impressionist painters, can capture their own moods and moments in songs, make us feel connected by our own experiences, and then also make it sound really, really good. RM is so talented because he can do this on his own projects, and also in his work with the team. I hope these songs continue to bring comfort and strength to you when you need it 💜

jennptx

Yes, exactly! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

chimelle6

Also, Joon's first mixtape is available on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/bangtan/sets/rm-rap-monster), all tracks are samples with original verses from him and he really showcases his flow and rap abilities

Giu Bressani

this album is such a comfortable hug for so many people and it really means a lot that Joon decided to share his feelings and thoughts with us. I knew you would love this and I'm glad you found this album. I hope it can be as healing to you as it's been to so many of us for the past years

Giu Bressani

thank you for this<3 joon is actually from ilsan not seoul. you can find RM by rap monster on soundcloud, a reaction to that would be interesting someday

el

I started bawling my years when Everything goes came on. This year has been the worst for me so far. I got emotional with you and cried my eyes out.

mammalay

This is my interpretation of that line, too. Like ashes to ashes, dust to dust. I wonder if the other references to "ashy" could be because of the environmental conditions in Seoul? It makes me think of what I've heard about the fine dust, people masking up when there's air quality warnings, etc.

jennptx

Tribe loui cryed listening to everything goes too. That song is special.

Kasapo Mwanza

I had two thoughts with these lines as well. Feeling like a torso, without arms and legs or even a head--mobility is so much more difficult, maybe even thinking clearly is absent. It's such an interesting description of what it feels like to me on those days where I feel like I can't move, there's no motivation, no dreams, no goals, and I'm just existing. With Pinocchio, I also thought about being a puppet--so not only not human, but not having control of your movements, and I wonder if at times, especially when on tour or out of town for work, it may feel like that

jennptx

I also saw a version with "feel like a tourist, so"

Maya

the line is "ash is a thing someday we all should be"and i think ist referencing that we all should die no one should live forever

julian kristiansen rundhaug

Wow, my comfort Album Mono. This Album holds a special place in my heart. What a treat today!💜

mammalay

Had to pause already right at the 4:28 mark 🤣 Joon specifically didn’t release or confirm lyrics on this album because he wanted people to connect with they heard and that beginning line is my absolute favorite example. People argue between if he said ‘feel like a torso’ and ‘feel like a torn soul’. I argue that it’s both and he new exactly what he was doing with that. I had first heard ‘feel like a torso’ because I was in a pretty numb state of existence and I think that’s such a perfect description … in that state where you don’t really have thoughts or feel your heart it’s just numbness, but heard ‘feel like a torn soul’ when I wasn’t in the numb state of depression but more struggling with the way the world is and who I was … both aspects of depression and/or having a hard time but different aspects of it and going into Pinocchio which not feeling human goes into both of those feelings … and … and … and … I could go on forever haha but on with the video.

chimelle6

OMG YEEEESS!!

Mariana

Love all the album reactions.... I'm crossing my fingers that you will find time to do Power To Play the new McFly album that dropped June 9th, the same day as Niall's. Love Niall and Love my McFly!!!

Kristina

YESSS! And you posted when I’m free. ☺️ So excited, but also mentally preparing. Thank you so much for this.

chimelle6

How are you going to drop this right before I start work. I can’t wait to see your reaction later😀

H

I’m early and I’m so excited!!!
