Wicked Reaction

I loved your reaction! Galinda/Glinda is not and has never been a good person. She didnt have a genuine/selfless change of heart at the Ozdust ballroom. She attempted to clean up her mees of a cruel prank, but only after learning that Elphaba was the reason she got her life's dream of joining the sorcery class. All of her choices were either made of selfish intentions, or cruel intentions, or both. After spending most of the school year bullying Elphaba, they become friends (because of Elphaba's kind actions) and then they go to the Emerald City together and after learning the truth about the Wizard, Glinda gaslights and abandons her "best friend" to join the fascists immediately after they publicly insult and vilify Elphaba! I wont get into her character after the intermission (part 2), but I honestly felt like she was the straight up villain in the Wizard of Oz when I was a kid, because she taunted the Wicked Witch of the West about the death of her sister immediately after Dorothy's house landed on her, stole the shoes off the feat of the dead Wicked Witch of the East and gave them to Dorothy and told her to never give them back to their rightful owner, manipulated Dorothy (a literal child from another world) and sent her to the Wizzard who she knew was a fraud and would use her to kill the Wicked Witch. Then, after the Wizard was exposed and accidentally fled Oz without Dorothy, Glinda reappears and tells the child that she had the power to go home all along (the stolen shoes) and after sending the child she used to get rid of the other 3 leaders of Oz, she was the last man standing and the sole ruler of Oz.

Lucile Byrd

You should watch the Wizard of Oz movie. Elphaba’s name is based on the initials of the author L. Frank Baum. LFB. There are a lot of references to the movie, such as the scene with Mrs. Gulch taking Toto away in a basket on her bicycle. Part 2 is going to explain so much.

Cynthia Farrington

please do les mis!!!!

Sophie

So one Glinda was highly manipulated also I was wondering since madam marbille is a sorcerer of the weather if the thunder clouds and them being green was her doing to make her seem even more wicked.

Rachel Aaron

I don’t think it was questioning the cause I think she cared for Elphaba so much that she was worried what would happen to her like the consequences and that made her try and change her mind.

Rachel Aaron

OH I HAVE TO ADD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf0mAfTeU-w it IS Anthony Bridgerton's horse!

Darsy Smith

"Ya'll are makin' it hot" MY GOD YES THEY ARE. When he did Dancing Through Life I basically saw my whole life flash before my eyes. Man is just INSANE with the chemistry. With everyone, yes, but when he LIKES someone SWOON ALERT (I typed 'apart' first and yeah, I'm destroyed, fell apart, etc.).

Darsy Smith

Excited for this! My youngest was born in 2014 which happened to be the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, and I didn't realize that when we named her Dorothy! So while it's not my favorite IP I've heard there are a lot of nods to the movie in this. I'm a HUGE fan of Jonathan Bailey and I'm stoked to see him in this! Love your musical reactions and cycle around on my Patreon support, couldn't be happier to be back <3

Darsy Smith

im late but i hope you watch the deleted scenes on your own time because galinda and elphaba have two deleted scenes that really solidifies their friendship and shows galinda's love for elphaba that I wish they didn't cut out

Nick

I mean this is her villain origin story, so she probably changes a lot from part 1 to the end of part 2. But if you’re constantly calling someone evil, they’re gonna end up acting that way.

Emma Flake

One more things. If you rewatch the opening scene with the context of the friendship between Glinda and Elphaba you see glindas reactions to the munchkins singing about Elphaba being wicked differently. You can see that she’s mourning her friend and is silently outraged by the hatred. She doesn’t hate Elphaba. She’s just one of the people who easily falls victim to falling in line and doing as she’s told to further her own plans. She’s also realizing SHE herself is wicked. She herself will not be mourned as she is wicked, she has been left alone. Especially with context of the second film she is one of the wicked herself. You can also see sadness when she sings “goodness knows she died alone.” I challenge to real watch the opening scene and pay attention to her facial expressions. She isn’t REALLY happy to be there.

Monica Torres

Also idk if it means much but when galinda set Boq up with Nessarose, mess told Elphaba she wished there was a way she could repay galinda for her kindness. Then galinda invited Elphaba to the ozzdust and Elphaba thought the invitation was kind and genuine reaffirming nessarose. So she asked for galinda to be included in sorcery class in good faith.

Monica Torres

Some cool stuff is they filmed the singing live so any stunts like Cynthia flying in her harness and all dancing was done live while they sing live. Also elphaba was named after the original author of the wizard of oz books L. Frank Baum so the beginning of his first initial, middle and last names created Elphaba for the wicked author. Also the hint is the other man seeing her mother is Elphabas true father, he sings “have another drink of green elixir and follow me down.” Insinuating she became pregnant during her trysts with this man. One of my favorite things is the title card. The title card is the same one used in the wizard of oz, as a way to pay homage to its source material. Also I don’t if you’ve seen it or heard of it but Jane’s Franco started in another wizard of oz film called Oz the great and powerful he played the wizard his name was Oscar dogs and he arrived in Oz in the same balloon used in wicked. They also gave the wizard the same name and used the same posters that were attached Jed to his ballon in Oz the great and powerful. They did this so they gave a nod to both the wizard of Oz and Oz the great and powerful.

Monica Torres

“I will transform this stumble frock/coat into a ball gown.” “With what your remote control??” LMFAOOOOOOOOO

princesspebble

Jeff Goldblum is considered an excellent Jazz pianist and has released several albums. According to Wicked choreographer, Jeff did his own dancing and singing for his role as the Wizard.

Laura Moore

They built the train in real life to film this!!

Chloe Sullivan

Another thing you missed is that Miss Coddle the Head Shiztress is the same actress who played the Bearded Lady in The Greatest Showman.

Michelle_genX4lyf

agreed! also when he's googling

Soren

After going to see it for a solid two weeks it’s the only thing I could listen to! I’d go back and forth between the movie and og soundtrack! Both are so freaking good. If you haven’t yet I’d definitely recommend listening to the original. Make sure to stop at defying gravity though so you don’t get spoilers for pt 2.

chimelle6

Finally got to watch this!! I’m happy for us that you waited and reacted but I’m sad for you that you didn’t get to see it in the theater! It’s just one of those moves that feels a little extra in that setting. I feel like with part 2 you should see it in the theater then do a second watch reaction with us? I feel like this is the type of movie that you pick up a little bit more of what it’s trying to tell with each watch so it’d still be a great reaction!

chimelle6

As someone who is a new fan to Wicked and watched a "slime tutorial" of the show, I can't wait to see how they do Part 2 especially with the songs in those so get ready for that when that comes out

Adrianne Celeste

Hey bro amazing reaction! But whenever you start talking, can you pause the movie? You were talking through a lot of little plot points and song lyrics and missed some moments! But I loved your reaction!!!

Blaine Davis

🖤🖤🖤

QueenTam

I feel like “the artichoke is steamed” joke completely went over your head😭 She was pretty much just comparing her to an artichoke since they’re both green, and since she got frustrated with Glinda’s reluctance, Glinda pretty much said “Aww you mad?🥺” by calling her a steamed vegetable 😂

Breann Dorsey

Yes, Nessa said "I only wish there was something I could do to repay her" and Elphaba is such a good sister so she did something about it. Then she was also reinforced by Glinda inviting her and giving her the hat.

Safa

Johnathon Bailey's horse is actually the same one from Bridgerton! He requested him.

Safa

you should def watch the original wizard of oz!!

Julie

Also i'd recommend watching the press interviews, behind the scenes and anything else you can find. The fact they sang live still amazes me. Also a lot of the sets were real, like planting 9 MILLION tulips for the set of munchkin land. Crazy. There's an interview with nathan crowley on how he built and designed the sets which was super interesting

Jules

I first watched this in the cinema when it came out and obvs loved it. I didn't know the full story before seeing, so watching it again just now made the 'no one mourns the wicked' scene hit so much harder. Sobbed my eyes out watching Glinda in that scene knowing everything she and elphaba went through

Jules

Michael, we’re all holding space with your crush on Jonathan Bailey. No worries. 💚🩷

Dennis Roberts

The Defying Gravity performance is even more wild when you realize that in additon to singing live and the flawless acting, Cynthia did he own stunts. So she was singing and acting while being flung around on a harness.

tartdarling

I don’t know if you caught, but Idina and Kristen aka the Wise Ones played Elphaba and Glinda in the original stage play. 😌

Nala

This movie was so well done I can’t wait for part 2 😭😭 it was so fun watching with you! You should definitely react to some of the original soundtrack songs too! (Obviously only the ones from this half)

Bailey Gennings

i can’t wait for you to see part 2! i definitely recommend rewatching the wizard of oz in the meantime

McKenna DeFranco

love that you mentioned interstellar when you saw the library set! nathan crowley was the production designer for both movies :)

McKenna DeFranco

Like others have said, definitely go back and watch the opening scene now and you’ll see that Ari is projecting sadness even though she’s “celebrating”. Her performance is so layered and impeccable.

Kelsie Brake

I was sobbing in theaters with their silly solidarity dance and I sobbed again 🥹

Mariana

Kristin Chenoweth was Glinda and Idina Menzel was Elphaba. Also, that high note that Idina did, the "Aaaaah" is a nod to her ICONIC high note in Defiying Gravity. I screamed at the movies haha

Maralys Cedeno

ahhh love this movie so much!

heather

The consistency of your Harry Potter references and your anger at them was hilarious 😂

Jennifer Cash

Its a two part because, the director said he wants it to feel exactly as if you were watching it at the theater with an intermission. So happy you watched it. Loved it!

Maralys Cedeno

I’m not kidding this is the best day of my life I was praying you would do this reaction 😭😭😭😭😭

kaylaco

Cynthia is an Oscar win away from gaining EGOT status! Her and Arianna couldn’t be more perfect 💜

Rosielauren xo

Definitely watch the first scene again. After a rewatch, I saw different things in Glinda's face.

Jessi

Happy new year, this is my 4th time watching this movie and I’ve loved this musical since I was in high school. They really did it justice, I’m so glad you liked it!!

Kim

YAAAAAY! We got spoiled 💖

krissy

Also they sing live! You said you avoided everything about the movie and that’s such a cool detail that was revealed. You can hear slight differences between the official soundtrack and the songs in the movie

Jaleah Green

OMGGGGG

Alexia

I had no idea when I suggested a Wicked movie album reaction that they'd be surprising us with a super early streaming release! This is SO much better!

Jessi

This right here. Ari’s subtle facial expressions during that whole song were spectacular. You don’t get that in the stage show but you can just tell as soon as the first guy interrupts her and sings “No one mourns the wicked” I could see how not knowing the story you could see it as her being upset at getting interrupted but the hurt in her eyes for her friend is so good!

Susan Deans

I completely agree that Ariana and Cynthia were the right choices for these roles, they were both phenomenal as Glinda and Elphaba, as were the dozens of incredible women who have played these roles in theatres around the world for 20 years, starting with Kristin and Idina. That is one of the amazing things about theatre is getting to watch different people's takes on the characters. As you mentioned there were quite a few moments when the lighting did bother me, it was just too bright and it tended to wash out a few of the scenes, Dancing Through Life is the most noticeable. As someone who has loved this musical since I was 16, it's what got me into musical theatre, I was very nervous to watch this movie but it exceeded all of my expectations, I couldn't have asked for anything more.

Dannielle

Oh this has made my day 🩷

Rosielauren xo

fiyero’s horse is actually the same one from bridgerton!

ann

This was my third time watching and it was so fun to watch along with you. Wicked is my favorite musical and I've been waiting years for this movie to be made, but I'm so glad it took as long as it did because it wouldn't have been the same without Ari and Cynthia as Glinda and Elphaba. As you said, they both embodied these roles so perfectly. And Jon M Chu did such a brilliant job adapting this and he was so right that it needed to be two movies. The musical is great but it moves at such a fast pace. There's barely any space between the music, so doing it all in one go would have felt so rushed as a film. I'm so excited to see part 2 in November. Also this movie really wouldn't have been the same without Ariana because she was kind of the unofficial Wicked historian on set. There are so many little things from the musical that fans love that she made sure they kept in the movie. Several of them weren't even in the original script until she told them they had to be. You should look up the video of her finding out she got the part. It's so sweet. And you were right, Kristin was Glinda, and Idina was Elphaba. They originated the roles on Broadway. And Glinda was written specifically with Kristin in mind and she even helped to develop the character. I'm sure I'm not the only one who told you this in Glee, but I think I mentioned it in every episode they were in. I tried so hard to be subtle about it and not give away why I wanted you to know that or remember them. But your reaction to that once you realized who they were was great.

Jared

yesss i knew you’d watch this

tanasia

there’s a deleted scene that takes place after “i’m not that girl” where glinda asks elphaba why she chose fiyero and not her that day with the sleeping spell and she tells her that she would have helped her too so she may not care about the animals but she does about her. elphaba then promises to never leave her behind again which is why she invites her to meet the wizard and asks her to escape with her at the end. out of all the deleted scenes, that’s one that really shouldn’t have been cut.

Lisa

I didn’t get to see this in cinema, just haven’t had the chance and it’s so expensive nowadays. Didn’t know you’d be doing this, so thank you, was fun to watch together :))💃💃

Eefa

This is my favorite subscription I have Lol There’s always reactions to my favorite movies and it feels like I’m watching it with a friend. Truly grateful. 💚

Marissa Franco

So glad you enjoyed this! Everyone killed it, but Cynthia and Ariana? Whew... I can't wait for part 2 💚🩷

Jade

oh you HAVE to watch the wizard of oz immediately. and then rewatch this lol cause the easter eggs and references are SO important

Clara Leach

The storytelling is so, so good. To find out the trouble started for the animals during the great drought, and then we get a chance to see who has the power to control the weather, stop the rain, and cause a drought in a seemingly innocent interaction. It's great foreshadowing for when new viewers find out who the real villains are at the end.

A

I stayed up to 6am to immediately watch the full reaction and have no regrets - thank you Michael ❤️ (and you were right, Kristen was the original Glinda and Idina was Elphaba)

Lisa

Loved your reaction! One thing I noticed that I think people don’t see initially is Glinda’s expressions throughout No One Mourns the Wicked. If you look closely she doesn’t appear genuinely happy about Elphaba being dead, more like she has to perform as if she is. Ari talks about that moment in an interview, but Glinda throughout the movie is performing for others what she thinks goodness is or looks like and that opening scene sets that tone for me! I loved this movie so much and I hadn’t known anything about the plot before hand, so glad you watched it❤️

Jaleah Green

Literally right after I finished watching Wicked tonight, Michael uploads this reaction 😆. So of course I watched it twice tonight lol

Christina Johnson

Pretty sure that one teacher was the bearded lady in The Greatest Showman so I hope she gets a song in part 2

Tomasina

So funny you mention Anthony and his horse riding during Bridgerton. Jonathan Bailey asked the director if his Bridgerton horse could be his horse in Wicked too. It makes sense because it helps to have a good relationship when working with animals, so that's what happened. His scenes with his horse while playing Fiyero, he's working with his Bridgerton horse, Jack.

A

when i say i listen to this soundtrack in the gym i don’t joke… also so jealous that you got to see interstellar in IMAX it wasn’t anywhere close to me 😩

Adam Geiser

This made my night, cannot wait to get some popcorn and watch tomorrow night! 💚

Alycia Ortiz

Yeah I feel like it was this + that the hat and invite to the ballroom felt genuine to her at the time. So she returned Glinda’s “genuine” gestures with one of her own, only to be met with that humiliation at the oz dust 🥲

Storm

Coming back to add that “is this the wizard rolling up? Is he…small?” made me lol 😂

Storm

This made my whole year already thank you Bev 🥹

Lucille

You will not believe the rest of the story! It is so amazing. But for the full experience it would be awesome if you’d watch the wizzard of oz before part two. There were a lot of easter eggs and references to the original in this movie :)))

Chireny de Groot

Elphaba vouched for Glinda because of what she thinks she did for Nessarose by emboldening Bok to ask her out

Lorena Oliveira

I have seen this movie twice and I can’t wait to watch a third time with you! :)

Tessa Noble

literally just finished my first watch and have a headache from crying so much but idc we go again 💚✨🩷

ang

OMG YES ALFIE AND IM HERE damn custom request brain wow ok THANK YOU Lailah 😅

Lailah

OMGGGGT

Giu Bressani

The beginning when they are talking about a melting, in the wizard of oz, the wicked witch of the west dies by Dorothy throwing a bucket of water on the witch which causes her to melt to death. I could point out so many things in this movie haha but what you should know is they all sang the songs live!!

Lindsay

omg!! can't wait to watch for the third time with you 😁

Lailah

OMGG resubscribed for this i’m so excited

ann

Yeeeesss your musical reactions are some of my favorites ♥️
