Let's Talk About Noclip 2.0

Hey Patrons,

I want to talk to you about the future of Noclip.

When we started on this journey two years ago I pitched a version of Noclip that I'd conceptualized and budgeted over the course of a few months. I actually built three business models which correlated to three thresholds of funding we may achieve. Thanks to our incredible launch funding we were able to do everything on our wish-list including international documentaries and more.

Well, over the past two months I've been back at it. During my parental leave I spent some time looking at our numbers and thinking about what I want Noclip to evolve into. Looking at what we'd do if our current level of funding increase by 25%, 50% or even 100%.

You can actually see those new goals on the current Noclip Patreon homepage but that's just one piece of a larger strategy kicking off this month and continuing for the rest of our third year.

I'm calling it Noclip 2.0 - a vision for the future of this channel.

Soon enough you'll see a trailer which details the 4 main goals we have for Noclip in our third year, and the four levels of funding required to achieve them. But let me give you a quick rundown of them here.

#1 Historical Docs
Investing in multi-location shoots so we can film docs on older games and more nebulous aspects of gaming such as journalism & workers rights.

#2 Embedded Docs
Embedding in studios periodically over months or even years. Investing in content over time that will eventually tell the story of an entire game's development.

#3 New Equipment
Upgrade all our cameras to 4k, supply studios with their own cameras to film while we're not there and hire extra help for shoots when we need it.

#4 More Docs, More Often
Invest in full-time staff and more guest hosts to double the amount of docs we currently release.

We're going to be asking our YouTube audience directly via a trailer in the coming days but I wanted you to all know before we launch it. I've no idea if this will make a drop in the bucket right away so we're planning on pushing this campaign for the rest of the year to see where we end up.

So yeah, I've got big ideas about what we can do with Noclip and my dream would be to continue to do so via crowdfunding entirely. It's the first big funding push we've done since launch so I'm equal parts nervous and excited, but in any case we have more of the docs you love coming over the next few weeks and months. Expect an patron-only update on all that stuff soon.

Let me know what you think of Noclip 2.0

And wish us luck! ;)

I particularly like the idea of having multiple teams tackling different projects - as someone who is getting into videographer/filmmaking work, I'd love to be part of a "B crew" that can tackle other areas/small projects than the NoClip "A crew" is tackling!

Cameron Bryce

Doubled my pledge. Sounds awesome Danny. :)

Steve Dennis

'more nebulous aspects of gaming' - I think I like that idea, since it's actually why I used to enjoy 'the point' - you talk about 'issues' in gaming which aren't specifically about a single game, but affect the whole industry. 'Early access' is a theme I'd like to see explored. :)

So excited about this! Thanks for doing this :)

Aggressive goals....I love it! My favorite new levels are of course embedded docs and the historical retrospectives. Excited to be part of Noclip. Here is the deal - I’m trying out for a new role at my company. If I get it - I’ll bring up my contribution by 66%! So cross your fingers for me :)

Epic work mate. Super happy for you and excited for the future. My only concern would be the Guest Hosts, as I find your hosting to be one of the main attractions of the NoClip documentaries. That said, the guest spot with Alanah Pearce was fantastic, so I have complete faith in your ability to choose guest hosts who fit the NoClip mold.

Theron Miles

Definitely excited for what future docs might be coming out now.

That all sounds great, Danny! Can't wait to see where you take things!

Nicholas Decker

Unfortunately, the dollar to BR reais exchange is crazy at the moment. I'm at the 5 USD tier and can't upgrade right now, but I'll support your vision for the foreseeable future.

Love your work Danny, you'll always have my support and I wish you the best.

I agree completely, as someone who works at a game developer, it takes a team of talented folk in several departments to make a big incredible game. And I think it would be wonderful to get more insights across the board in each doc, there are a few things to keep in mind. Not everyone would want to or feel comfortable to talk on camera. Normally it's only the department leads who are allowed to talk publicly to media about development because they have experience doing it and know the most about their games and the team. There's only so much time in a day for Danny and co to spend talking to devs for docs (although that might change if new funding goals are hit). And people move on, someone who might have been the QA lead for a game, might have moved on to new horizons by the time Danny comes around to do a doc. So there are just a few reasons why talking to several people from different departments can be hard for a doc (and there are likely even more). But totally would love for it to happen more too if possible 🙂

Embedded documentaries are always interesting, as one of my favorite things from Giant Bomb is still the Bastion behind-the-scenes videos. All of these sound great. Good Luck!

Silver-Streak

Better and more sounds good to me!

Hassun

I love these plans! I'm very interested in the possibility of historical and embedded docs.

Heidi Mandelin

This is awesome! I can't wait to see what you folks do, and I really really hope you reach your top goal. A fully staffed Noclip would be a dream to see.

Quinn_Town

What I'd give to get out of the crummy video job I have now to work on stuff I actually care about. Damn. Happy to see all is going well.

Joel Powley

Makes complete sense, hope you guys smash it—you certainly deserve to.

Great ideas Danny. Excited for Noclip 2.0

I'd like to see a documentary with all the game developers rather than just 30 minutes of mostly designers talking. As part of a developer team, it is frustrating to see a huge focus on only one\two facets of game development rather than the breadth of it. There are QA, Scripters, Animators, Modelers, Sound Designers, etc. that are constantly pushed back to give more room for lore, game design, and music in the overall documentary. This is a problem because it perpetuates the public and industry assumption that everything else should remain as an afterthought, especially sound. The purpose of a documentary is overall insight, if not to be educational. Unless of course it is advertised to be the focus on a particular area, which I don't think noclip is or tries to be.

Glenn with the extra n.

Hey Danny, have you ever thought of doing more docs about community’s built around games? For example, I really enjoyed the hillbilly’s of GTA. Would also love to see some more indie dev stories from small studios, like you did on the recent game-grumps doc. Also maybe a doc on a specific generation of gamers or console generation, covering gaming in the 90s or 80s for example? Sorry, I’m full of ideas :) Dan

I want all of this, especially stuff on specific issues and the embedded docs, similar to what Two Player Productions did (does?) with Double Fine Productions. But, this is all sounds super expensive and difficult, so if you need to change tiers and stuff don't hesitate! And if there's crowd-sourced work the patrons can do, anything to help :)

Ethan Thibault

Nice to see some attention given to historical topics. Sure hope they go back far too, I'm sure there's a bunch of unsung heroes around the 2600 / C64 era which I never heard about.

YesButSeriouslyTho

Yea we did make a bunch of those and should definitely share them more often. Social often has the affect of "preaching to the choir" unless you get folks to share the work. So it's a balancing act of promoting without spamming your audience. Good idea to do more of it around 2.0 though.

Noclip

Sounds awesome! Have you thought about trying to push more content to social? I think uploading short, stand out clips directly to FB/Twitter/Insta could be a great way to gain some more organic reach. Would be happy to help

Bring alanah back or we RIOT 😘😁

This sounds pretty damn great. I whole heartedly support it.

Robb Twomey Dunphy

Sounds great! I see no reason not to go for it!

Maene Erinys

That all sounds extremely good ^_^
