Fun fact: Rob Van Dam was known as “Mr. Monday Night.” He took this nickname in ECW in his heel persona because ECW fans hated WWF and WCW and they know what night those shows were on. Anyway, when RVD won MITB, he called himself Mr. Money in the Bank to play off of that. TO THIS DAY, the male winner goes by Mr. Money in the Bank. Señor MITB in Damian Priest’s case.

On the premiere episode of ECW, Heyman awarded RVD the "original" ECW world title, and Van Dam decided to hold both the ECW and WWE titles at the same time, therefore making a double world champion. He held both titles for about 21 days, because RVD was pulled over alongside Sabu in a DUI for having marijuana on his car, and being clearly high. So, Van Dam lost both titles in the same week; he lost the title to Edge at the Vengeance pay-per-view, and two days later, dropped the ECW world title to Big Show after Heyman turned on him. And RVD never managed to win another world title in WWE. He left the company in 2007, and besides a one-off appearance in the 2009 Royal Rumble, and a one-year run between 2013-2014, RVD never competed for WWE full-time again. And to answer your questions regarding the storyline building up to it. In 2005, WWE launched the first-ever ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view, and it was purely a non-storyline show featuring matches between ECW Originals and some WWE wrestlers. IIRC, it was RVD's idea to host it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that. Then, the next year, WWE decided to relaunch ECW as a third brand along with Raw and SmackDown. The 2006 WWE Draft only featured one wrestler from Raw and SmackDown being sent to ECW, purely chosen by Heyman. Heyman chose RVD from Raw, and Kurt Angle from SmackDown to become a member of the ECW roster. When the announcement was made, RVD challenged Cena for the title by announcing his cash-in ahead of time (as you saw during the promo package). RVD was the first wrestler to announce his cash-in ahead of time. Ironically, the second man (and currently the last one to date) to do so was Cena, who won the 2012 MITB match and announced he would challenge CM Punk at Raw 1000 for the title. He also became the first man to fail to win a title via cash-in after Big Show interfered and attacked him. Cena did win the match, but not the title.

It's great, mostly carried by that amazing Cena performance, it might be the closest he got to being a heel and judging by this match it would have been glorious. The match falls a bit flat when RVD is in control. The crowd was sick though. **** This was after WWE acquired ECW so it's not too surprising that RVD won, at this time WWE would never even consider working with other promotions, let alone give them their world title. Other great ECW matches that I would recommend checking out are Tajiri vs super crazy from 2000, Jerry Lynn vs Steve Corino from ECW heatwave 2000 and any of the Tanaka vs Awesome matches, but their best was at one night stand 2005.

RVD was apart of ecw but joined wwe after the closure. 3 years later they put out a documentary called the rise and fall of ecw dvd and it sold so well, that WWE decided to put on a ecw tribute show in 2005 that was a massive a success. This was a year later and was a follow up to that event, it would also serve as the relaunch of ecw as a third brand to raw and SD. The perfect place for RVD to cash in his briefcase for a title shot. Paul Heyman, the owner of the original ecw, was also head of creative for this new version but that didn’t last long though, Heyman left the company due to disagreements with Vince McMahon and it just became another wwe show, it lost a lot of what made ecw special. It became more of a brand for young guys getting their start. If WWEECW is notable for anything it’s for guys like kofi and Sheamus getting their start on it. It would last a few years before becoming nxt.

2024-06-27 01:46:44 +0000 UTCLet me just say that ECW was a promotion in the late 1990s that wwe bought out in 2001 alongside WCW that put on Extreme Hardcore matches every match and WWE brought it back as a third brand in 2005 so they could have their own extreme rules brand. They really tamed down this version of ECW because of how violent the 90s promotion was wouldn't have been good for WWE TV even in 2005 era WWE.

At 16:00 the crowd is chanting "Whole fuckin' show" which was RVD's nickname, and at 28:05 I think they're chanting "John Cena sucks".

So wwe decided to make it a third brand. So Raw smackdown ecw. To remote it rvd won the money in the bank and etc… lasted 4 years until ecw became nxt

That's what they meant in the video package because Money in the Bank was at Wrestlemania that year. Actually, Money in the Bank used to be exclusivly at Wrestlemania until 2010 where we got the Debut of the Money in The Bank PPV. So, in 2010, we got a Money in the bank match at Wrestlemania 26, and of for Raw and Smackdown at the Money in The Bank PPV. Also, this was ECW One Night Stand. This is just a PPV with all the original ECW people with some WWE people sprinkled in. They just did it for a night so relive ECW. Rob Van Dam was a big star in ECW, so that's why he got the reaction he did. Cena and RVD were faces but just like at Money in the bank 2011 with CM Punk and John Cena, he got a similar reaction here. That's why I made the comment on that video where it reminded me of this. They also had an ECW One Night stand in 2005 too. I remember my Uncle ordering it on PPV and watching it. Then in 2007 and 2008 it became One Night Stand. It fully became a WWE PPV at that point. after that, in 2009 they named it Extreme Rules which we still have today. ECW was it's own brand until they went out of business in 2001. Rob Van Dam was in WWE on RAW with Cena. They just called it his house, because this is where he started. This was also a year or two after Cena thuganomic days.

The shows in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. I think it’s not far from Madison Square Garden. Kevin Nash, Rhyno and The Steiners are also all from Michigan too. Detroit for Nash and Rhyno I know for certain, not sure about Rick and Scott. 16:14 chant is “Whole fuckin show”. I think the chant you heard as “Cena sellout” was “Cena sucks cock”.
