Scene Kangaroo & Mouse Pose Exploration

Thumbnailing and zooming out helps with poses a lot. It helps me get the whole picture before I go in an add details. I'm always going for flow, good shapes, and balance.

It's hard to explain, because a lot of it is simply intuitive from decades of practice. But two main things I keep my mind on are the Line of Action and Negative Space.

You can easily draw a line through the characters to get a sense of their direction. Draw a curved line from their head through their body to see the flow! I like to use a lot of "S" and "C" shapes.

Check out the negative space in the characters. If you colored them in black, you'd be able to tell what they're doing just based off their silhouette. This is not always attainable as limbs sometimes are drawn in front of the body, and that's okay! Not every pose has to have the limbs outside of the main silhouette of the body.  It can help to create a silhouette of the pose to help get a feel of how it's coming along.
