Small Update/Question

Chapters coming soon. Part 2 is just... again getting way too long. Might end up at 9k+ words again. Chapter 35 is basically finished because it is a rewrite of an older chapter that I used, so I don't have to worry much about that coming days late.

Anyway, for the future: would you rather have me splitting the bigger chapters into parts so you have something to read or would you like to have one big chunk that might end up taking you 30mins to finish?

Depending on your votes, the big chapters will be published on Thursdays and the smaller ones on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting next week. For this week there will still be part 2 and chapter 35 + Tree. Just not on schedule like I wanted.

PS: Making a dungeon interesting is harder than I thought.

Ah, also, I'll be changing the currency to € soon because I made a mistake when I started the Patreon and had to wait 6 months before I can change it. I'm from Europe, so it's a bit inconvenient for me to have it in $. It shouldn't affect you that much, though.

You’re running into a little bit of survivor bias with this kind of question. I prefer the longer chapters, and I think long chapters generally are higher quality. But I think short chapters and more frequent chapters are more important if you want engagement and money. It simply looks better on paper to say I have 10+ chapters on my patron, then it looks to say have five chapters that are really long. Even if the 10 short chapters and the five long chapters are of equal length. Obviously, you can still get 10, 20, 30 chapters ahead with really long chapters, but that is extremely long time commitment. Another thing to consider is the type of people who buy Patreon. I’m going to use myself as a example. I generally only buy Patreon when I think it’s worth the money. And the way I judge that is how many chapters I’m “buying” when I’m buying a membership. This usually results in me buying a Patreon once. And then waiting a period of time until I can “buy” a similar amount of chapters I did the first time. Depending on how frequently they upload their chapters, this can range from a month after my membership expired, or 6+ months. Obviously, I still make exception. Sometimes I buy a Patreon membership because I’m really invested in the story despite maybe not getting many chapters. But generally, the lowest I’ll go in terms of chapter count is five. If the story doesn’t have that at least that many, then usually I won’t get the membership. But when I do decide to buy that five chapter membership, if a single chapter takes a month and then it will be five months before I consider getting it again, and if your single chapter take two months, that’s 10 months before I consider getting it again, and so on and so on. But even this is a little optimistic because of one simple fact. I forget about stories I read, either I completely forget about it, or I sort of forget what happened in the story. which sort of makes me not as inclined to buy something if I don’t remember what happened in it. This is why I say more frequent chapters is probably what you should go for. If you care are about consistent engagement. To be honest, you probably already know all this. But by asking the audience what they want, I think you’re going to get only one answer, because the people who stay here and continue their membership. Are people who currently like how you’re doing things. (Including myself) Obviously, I think you should do what you want. If you wanna make long chapters, go for it, I’m currently really enjoying what you’ve made so far, and I’m inclined to believe part of the reason why your chapters are really good is because they’re longer and have more time to bake in the oven. But from all the people I’ve seen be successful on the Royal Road platform. What’s the most important part of their success? It isn’t quality. at least from my observations. It’s quantity and consistency. That isn’t the say they some of these writers make bad stuff. I think a lot of them make some fun, entertaining and thoughtful stories. But I’ve also seen a lot of “mediocre” that’s really popular and the only thing making it out stick is just the amount they’re able to pump out. Anyways. All I was gonna say originally, was I prefer the longer chapters. But I felt bad saying that. Because I think it would be an uphill battle to be a successful full-time writer, making Long chapters. And if that’s not your goal, great. I like the long chapters I really do. But if your goal is to potentially make it, and become a profitable writer from Patreon or you eventually make your stories into paid novels. Then I think you should try making chapters you can pump out just slightly faster. I also wanna make abundantly clear there is nuance to everything I’ve said, and there are many moving parts and factors in all this. and There is not necessarily a right answer. An example how you changing to short chapters might change the perception of your story, is POV switches. In your story I really like the POV switches. I think they add a lot. But if you did shorter chapters, it ‘might’ feel like a long time between the main character POV chapters. And some readers might take issue with that. Obviously with your longer chapters, it’s rare to go through the entire chapter without a POV from the main character. But switching to shorter chapters might change that. I do feel with longer chapters. You can get away with doing more and exploring different concepts, or ideas within a single given chapter. And take everything I say with a grain of salt, I myself am not a writer, nor have I written anything. Does that makes everything I said meaningless? I don’t know. Again, sorry if this was just too much, I’m honestly not sure if it was appropriate for me to say all this. I hope you’re having a wonderful day and I wish you success in all you wish to accomplish. Edit Another thing to consider, and is a very important thing to consider. Is what you enjoy doing more. Do you enjoy making long chapters or short chapters? Because writing a book isn’t a sprint it’s a marathon. So if you try to pump out a ton of chapters and you burn out, then obviously you should take a different approach.
