Please enjoy a short snippet of the upcoming pirate novel, where the Ocean (who narrates the book) introduces us to Cass' ship.

Welcome aboard The Exile. You are one of the lucky few who can wander these boards freely, so let me show you about.

You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just another ship. It is persona non grata, a phantom at the hands of its captain, prowling the waters for prey. It is not the biggest ship, nor is it the smallest. It is, in fact, just right. It’s large enough that enemies will feel its bite, small and sleek enough to flee as fast as the wind can take her. I’ve been known to help an escape or two, pushing them forward as best I can.

There is a galley where Cook reigns as a king, below deck where cargo is stored and men make their beds. There’s a cabin for the captain, its windows almost always glowing bright. Above deck are the true workings of a ship. The ropes and rigging, the sails working as lungs and carrying them forward with every breath.

Let us not forget the crew, the worker ants essential to this beast. A patchwork of humans, all colours and creeds. For that reason, The Exile is a most perfectly named vessel. It welcomes all outcasts, expatriates and untouchables. Upon and within these boards they become simply ordinary. But they all agree on one thing; it’s a pirate’s life for them.
