Changing from Per Creation to Monthly?
Added 2021-01-30 20:08:03 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
I had a 90-minute come-to-Jesus chat with another webcomic creator this morning and he urged me to switch to a monthly model. I have to admit that the per creation model doesn't scale very well and becomes prohibitively expensive—which is a problem for higher-tier backers.
I'm seriously considering switching to a monthly model. I'd increase the amount per tier, but it wouldn't cost you MORE monthly than you've already paid in, say, January. It would also lock the amount to a fixed value and would not increase even if more comics get produced every month (like if I went back to a weekly schedule, for example). In addition to that, I'd add goals that would increase the rewards for various tiers once they're reached. Heck, one of them might even be for me to do this full time instead of as a hobby.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'd like to hear what you all think. I also need to check with Patreon how I can get this done. If you are largely in favor of it, I'd try to do it as early as March or April 2021.
Let the voting begin!

No worries, I was not offended at all and hope it didn't sound defensive. Your comment was perfectly fair and likely reflects concerns other backers might have as well. My only intent was to alleviate these concerns.

2021-02-01 02:01:32 +0000 UTCPlease don’t take my feedback as any form of accusation or criticism. It was intended to be very generic. I’m very satisfied and happy to be your patron. Keep it up! 😉

2021-02-01 01:12:04 +0000 UTCThis is all entirely fair, and I agree there would have to be as commitment to a minimal quantity of content. I'm very confident I can make that commitment and deliver on it. Of the total 400+ strips Wondollar and I released before the shut down, I think less than a handful were at most a day late; everything else was on time.

2021-02-01 00:31:49 +0000 UTCI’d say go monthly, with a few caveats: First, I’ll be honest, I haven’t kept as close of a track as I should. I like the “vintage” postings, but if I’m being charged for comics I’ve seen before (even if it was long ago), then my support would have to stop, no matter how much I love your work. Second, monthly is more predictable, budget-wise for both us and you, as Mark said. However, I’ve seen creators who do monthly (you’re currently the only one of mine who isn’t), and they tend to “drop out” by skipping a month or more without posting; so, it would be helpful to have some statement of commitment to go with the change; I.e., how many strips per month you will commit to delivering. Third, the monthly fee would have to fairly match the monthly production rate; for example, $10/month for one new strip is rather steep. Most whole standard comic books go for less than half of that. Anyway, that’s my two-cents... Keep up the great work, I love it and would miss it!

2021-01-30 21:13:04 +0000 UTCFunny you'd mention Brad, he's the creator I had a chat with this morning. He was incredibly generous with his feedback and I think it may have slapped me out of this lethargic feeling I've been experiencing.

2021-01-30 20:41:27 +0000 UTCI think Monthy would work better for your Patrons & you. They know what they’re paying every month and you’ll have a better idea of your income stream so you can plan. Brad Guigar over at “Evil Inc” did this and I gather he’s never done better.
2021-01-30 20:36:40 +0000 UTCThat's currently the case, yes. By going monthly, it locks the amount you pay monthly and you get all the content your tier gets--or more.
