Ah you haven't seen Buffy!! My favourite show of this era, looking forward to rewatching with you. I will say about the smooth shiny cheeks, unfortunately this show got a really bad quality re-master about 15 years ago and that's the only version available on streaming services. Cheeks so smooth they look plastic sometimes, Giles looking like he's wearing lipstick, and if the colour balance ever looks off, that's the reason. Plus they changed the format from old school 4:3 ratio to widescreen so you'll spot lots of crew, boom mikes, actors not really acting etc round the edges of scenes. If you can source a DVD copy it is so much better. But even so, the story is great, and the writers really new what they were doing.

I wonder that too about adding what would be considered "extra." I think it's all in the presentation. But I guess we'll see.

One more thing to add, in light of your comments after the show about how TV shows are structured now compared to then - I do appreciate tight, compact, efficient storytelling. But I also think that with respect to television, we've lost something in this "Netflix" era. It seems like every show, or at least every season, is hyper-focused around telling a single story, and rarely do shows get a chance to breathe. And you end up with as few as 5 or 6 episodes to a show (what we would have called a mini-series growing up), or more commonly 8. But when Buffy was being produced (and for many years before), TV series' would have around 22 episodes in a season. Which led to a lot of "filler" episodes - and Buffy is no exception, there are plenty of "monster of the week" episodes interspersed among the long-term storytelling arcs. But what we've lost is that those filler episodes often provided opportunities for our characters to interact and grow and develop, and for us as the audience to get to know them better. And that forges a deeper connection between us and them, and potentially makes the things that happen to them more impactful. If something happens to a character in, say, the middle of S2 of a show, it's generally going to hit harder if I've known the character for 33 episodes than if I've known them for 12. I do think there's a happy medium, and I don't think it's a one-size-fits-all thing - not all shows need to be the same length. Some TV shows are absolutely brilliant with shorter seasons (e.g. Andor, Arcane, though both of those are 12, which might even be that happy medium). But I do think that overall TV seasons have gotten too short (and I'm not even bringing up how often they don't get renewed past S2). I wonder if it's a pendulum that will swing back at some point.
