The Burned One

Basically, electrolysis hurts, and I like Dark Souls.

I am actually seeing results from the electrolysis, so it is actually a cycle that will end, but in the meantime, ouch ow goddamn FUCK OW.

In more pleasant news, apart from our basement issues (which should be all fixed up next week, finally), we're really liking Philly. In the past month we've gone to shows, hung out with friends, attended a bonus queer pride weekend, and gone to a Halloween craft fair in a giant cemetery. It's a cool city.

So after being disappointed with the results of laser hair removal, I sprung for electrolysis. Starting in my face, I actually found it less painful than the laser treatments had been. Then they started on my chest….. Dunno if it’s just the difference between laser and electricity, or if it’s because my anatomy has changed in two years, but gdamn does it hurt my breasts more than before!

I’ve been hitting the electrolysis hard core for the last few months: daily sessions. And I’ve got my numbing technique down to a solid routine. My electrolysis place is only 15mins away, so this may not work if you’re further away. 1) 60 mins before appointment, take maximum painkillers (for me: 2 extra strength Tylenol). 2) tie up hair and wash the area you’re treating with plain soap, nothing with fancy moisturizers, you’re aiming for dryness. 3) dab a cotton ball or cloth with rubbing alcohol and give the area a wipe down. 4) use a boar bristle brush to gently exfoliate the area. You want to agitate your skin juuuust a bit so the numbing cream can get in as deep as it can, but not so much agitation that you give yourself a rash or it starts hurting. 5) use a finger cot to apply numbing cream (I use Numb520 but any 5% lidocaine cream will work) to where the work will be done. Really use your finger to work the numbing cream into your skin (little circular motions) for an initial pass. Then do a second pass where you goop it on a bit thicker. 6) put plastic wrap on the area and press it against the numbing cream. It should stick in place. Use a sharp knife or scissors to carefully cut a hole for your mouth if you’re covering it. 7) put on a surgical mask to look approximately 2% less like a total crazy person. 8) go to your electrolysis appointment. Ask the clinician to only peel off the plastic wrap for the area they’re immediately working on. Peel some back, wipe off numbing cream, do some pokes. Peel, wipe, poke. I find that if they can uncover an area and work on it for 30 mins, that’s when the peak effectiveness wears off and it’s time to move on to the next area. Doing all this made a huuuuuuge difference for me.

Not looking forward to it but going to have to start soon. My hair is too light for laser removal and the facial hair just gives me so much dysphoria.

My hair is really gray, so they think 3 laser sessions will do all that can be done on the few remaining darker hairs, and then I'll need to start electrolysis. My first laser session is this Wednesday.

Yeah, I'm also in the laser camp, but eventually I'll have to do electrolysis for the escapees, especially on my face. Wish me luck 🤞

OftenSane

I'm glad you're enjoying your new city! ❤️

Marie Buhtz

That's unfortunate, sorry to hear it 😫

Robin Brooks

Me too! I have enough darker hairs to make laser worth it, but so many white facial hairs!

Grace Kieser

Yeah I couldn't do electrolysis, I just settled for laser and shaving once or twice a week or so. Needles get to me and feeling one in my face was too much

Elizabeth Holley

I'm still in the laser-before-electrolysis phase. At least laser seems to be doing something, even if I know I'll have plenty of electrolysis in my future due to lots of clear hairs. D:< Glad Philly is going well for you both! :D That is great to hear.

Madison Kava

Alas, laser has done all it can for me and I'm on to electrolysis now. Stupid late transition with the whites and grays.

Jonnie Irvine

I feel this. I'm on a break right now to find a new tech, but it does start to show results.

I’m nearing the end of my laser treatments and having a little buyer’s remorse. It hasn’t been as effective nor as permanent as I was hoping.

Taigan

Looking forward to my fourth laser session tomorrow, she's been cranking up the power each time and tomorrow I won't have time to put on numbing cream beforehand 😭

Laser for me.
