Episode 4 of Fall of Civilizations is now live on Soundcloud! It will soon be updating to all popular podcast platforms.

As usual I'm letting you, my subscribers, know a little earlier than everyone else  to thank you for all your support and encouragement. This is the longest episode yet, and the one I'm the most proud of. I really hope you enjoy it.

Some info below:

Episode 4. The Greenland Vikings - Land of the Midnight Sun

One of the most unlikely tales of a society’s fall is the incredible saga of the Vikings of Greenland. Find out how these European settlers built a society on the farthest edge of their world, and survived for centuries among some of the harshest conditions ever faced by man. Discover how this civilization was able to overcome the odds for so long, and examine the evidence about what happened to cause its final and mysterious collapse. Including Viking poetry, Inuit folktales and thousands upon thousands of walrus.

Thanks, really glad you enjoyed! Yes, Diamond does some great scholarship, but he is a little guilty of systematising and then reading everything according to his system. I do love Collapse though.

Fascinating subject presented in an utterly engrossing way, great episode. Having finished Diamond's Collapse recently, I liked that you situated his take on the fall of the Greenland colonies amidst new evidence. Something like whether a people did or did not adapt to another people's customs seems so difficult to parse out, especially given a dearth of evidence one way or the other. Again, great job, and looking forward to future episodes.

Immediately after I heard it I had to go back and listen it again. Mesmerizing story. I love how you always add the overall economic and climate version of each tale, which makes human settlement feel less like a tale of heroes and explorer and more like a type of vegetation, expanding to new areas when it gets the climate suits them, and moving out when it doesn't .
