6. Easter Island - Where Giants Walked

Another episode of Fall of Civilizations TV has just gone live, only for Patreon subscribers. It will be coming to YouTube in the coming weeks - but for now you are the only people to have access to it, and all completely ad-free. Your support has made it possible for me to include some absolutely gorgeous footage, including stunning aerials shot by a BBC team, and some original footage from Thor Heyerdahl's 1954 visit to Easter Island, which the Dutch national broadcaster agreed to sell me.

On top of this, we're going forward with recording a new episode using a quarantine-friendly home setup, so Episode 11 shouldn't be too far behind. This pandemic delay has gone on long enough, so I'm putting a halt on all video production until the brand new episode is out there.

Once again, thanks to all my supporters who have made all this possible.

6. Easter Island - Where Giants Walked

It's been a year, but it was one of the early explorers he cited saying that. They said it must have been South Africans who came to the islands, not Europeans, and that, for some reason, this explorer imagined this must have been white Europeans. It was particularly memorable...

Kathryn Nucci

Interesting! I would love to visit one day.

On the rock gardens - they do something similar on Shetland to this day - these rock enclosures are called Plantycrubs.

I never would've thought a podcast could make me cry... Thank you for this excellent piece of work

Martin

Yes it is! don be hard on yourself... there is little that can't be lost at the British ...

Fidel Echeverria

I've been to the British Museum a couple of times, how come I miss the Moai made from obsidian there? It should be hard to miss! Is it still there?

Roberto Siviero

I was vwry saddened by this Ilha da Pascoa episode, such cruelty, ignorance, darkness, all the worst traits that make humankind despiteful sometimes, even considering the circumstances of the era and the discrepancy in "development" between the islanders and the europeans/peruvians/chileans. Such a sad tale, going from bad to worse all the time!.

Roberto Siviero

Hi Paul, congrats on such a rich and erudite research and beautiful way of presenting it. In addition, an enthralling and perfect diction, I am envious!

Roberto Siviero

At some point during the podcast did you say something along the lines of "Europeans thought a lost white civilization had been here and had made the Moai" or am I imagining that? If I'm not could I have a source to that please? I'm trying to prove a point that I heard it somewhere

Nicholas Bowdler

Wow...what an incredible episode. I'm blown away by what I have learned...the correction of my understanding that the island was an ecological disaster that caused the culture to fail...the horrible impact of the diseases brought by "europeans" (encompassing Americans. South Americans, etc.)...the *enslavement* of the people...the repulsive actions taken by the Chileans...and more. Wow.
